Sound Bank - Trumpet Plunger Mute

About the plunger mute

The plunger is used a lot in jazz and big band music.

It is possible to buy custom made plunger mutes, but many musicians just use a traditional sink plunger.

In jazz a common use is to hold the mute over the bell and open it as the note speaks (as in the scale examples on this page).

When combined with a really short, accented note a 'popping' sound can be created by holding the plunger tight to the bell.

Another great effect is the lip trill when combined with the plunger mute. Click here to listen to a lip trill example
