Lloyd Carr-Harris Composer Competition

 Lloyd Carr-Harris Composer Competition
Summary:Competition for Canadian Composers
Deadline: 31 January 2020
Date Posted: 26 September 2019
Details: On April 25, 2020 the Canadian Men's Chorus will present a concert entitled 10! A Decade of Song.

This 10th anniversary celebratory concert will be an all-Canadian program, highlighting selections from Canada’s best low-voice repertoire and some of the CMC’s past commissioned works. It will also include the winner of the Lloyd Carr-Harris Composition Competition.

Emerging Canadian composers who have been composing professionally for ten years or less are invited to submit a new composition with a text written by a Canadian individual.

There is no age restriction.

The winning composer will receive a $2000 prize, donated by the Lloyd Carr-Harris Foundation.

Submission deadline: January 31, 2020 at Midnight.

Work submitted must be:

• an original composition that has not previously been performed which, if chosen, will have its world premiere performance by the CMC on April 25, 2020.
• 4-6 minutes in length
• a cappella or with piano accompaniment
• English or French text
• written for four part men’s voices TTBB. (Occasional divisi and solo lines are permitted, but cannot be a significant portion of the piece.)
• newly created works; arrangements of existing works are not accepted

Note – it is important to understand the size and nature of the group for which you are writing. The CMC is a 12-singer chamber ensemble comprised of advanced amateur singers. Standard vocal ranges for T1/T2/Bar/Bas voices apply, but please contact Lynn McMurray with any specific questions you may have.

Submission details:

• Scores must be computer generated, and accompanied by a midi file and a short note about the composition.
• As this competition will be judged by a blind jury, please remove everything from the score that would identify you as the composer. Attach a cover page with your name, email address, a short bio and any program notes you would like the jury to read concerning your piece. Should your piece be selected to win the competition, you will have the opportunity to re-submit the score with your name and copyright details properly affixed.
• Send submissions to Executive Director, Lynn McMurray at: lmcmurray@canadianmenschorus.ca

Submission deadline: January 31, 2020 at Midnight.

The Winning Composition:

• The winning composition will be selected by a blind jury of choral professionals and announced on February 11, 2020 via social media. By submitting to this contest, the winning composer agrees to the aforementioned social media announcement.
• The winner will be awarded $2000 generously donated by the Lloyd Carr-Harris Foundation and two tickets to the concert on April 25, 2020. The prize will be presented to the composer at the post-concert reception. If the composer is unable to attend, it will be mailed within ten (10) business days of the concert.
• The CMC Board of Directors reserves the right to declare that there is no winner in the unlikely event that none of the submissions merit the prize money.

Regarding Copyright:

• A letter of permission from the copyright holder must accompany all submissions with texts not currently in the public domain. Failure to provide proof of permission will result in disqualification.
• Caution: do not assume a text is automatically in the public domain simply because the creator has been dead for the requisite number of years. Some heirs to poets and writers such as Lucy Maud Montgomery maintain copyright for their works. Likewise some universities such as Oxford and Cambridge in the UK continue to hold the copyright in the estates of some writers.

The Canadian Men's Chorus is committed to the creation of new Canadian music for men’s voices and we are looking forward to hearing from you!
