 Triad Pride Performing Arts
Summary:Choral Competition
Deadline: 15 November 2019
Date Posted: 11 September 2019
Details: Contemporary Issues in Choral Composition 2019 Prizes

Triad Pride Performing Arts is pleased to announce two (2) 2019 Contemporary Issues in Choral Composition Prizes. This year the competition will award one prize for best work for tenor-bass chorus and one prize for best work for soprano-alto chorus.

Triad Pride Women’s and Men’s Choruses are community choirs for LGBTQ+ people and their allies. As such, compositions should address topics of contemporary social justice, such as gender identity, sexual orientation, racial or ethnic identity, or women’s rights, to name a few.

Compositions should recognize the capabilities of amateur adult choral music singers with no less than three and no more than five voice lines. Ranges should be reasonable for untrained singers (if unsure, inquire for more details). Style should be contemporary, preferring lyric vocal lines, and avoiding overly complex rhythms. Piano accompaniment is preferred, but accessible acapella will be considered. Inclusion of instrumentation (strings, brass) is strongly encouraged. The work’s duration must be a maximum of 5-7 minutes.

Pieces submitted to the competition may have been previously performed, recorded, or awarded other prizes. Pieces should not have been previously published; composers must control its copyright. Triad Pride Performing Arts does not require a transfer of copyright for any compositions. Winning composers will be required to agree to a non-exclusive, perpetual use license. Triad Pride will work with composers toward the publication of the work, if the composer is interested.

Composers of the winning compositions will receive $500 and performances of their work by the Triad Pride Women’s and Men’s choruses June 6th-7th, 2020 in Greensboro, NC. Winning compositions will also be considered for performance at the international GALA Festival 2020 in Minneapolis, MN. The composer of the winning work is encouraged to attend performances, but attendance is not required.

A video or audio recording of the performance will be provided. Triad Pride Performing Arts is not able provide a travel allowance for attendance at performances; housing can be arranged at a member’s home.

Submission deadline is November 15, 2019. The winning work will be announced on the Triad Pride Performing Arts website by January 1, 2019. The winner will also be contacted via e-mail.
