As a part of the October New Music Festival in Oulu, Finland, there will be a Microtonal Composition Masterclass given by Mr. Juhani Nuorvala from Thursday 27 September to Sunday 30 September 2018. Compose a piece The students will compose a piece of 3-6 minutes for 1-7 musicians of the MikroEnsemble. These instruments are available: • quarter tone flute • quarter tone clarinet • violin • cello • quarter tone piano • quarter tone accordeon • quarter tone guitar The contents of the masterclass The students’ compositions will be analyzed in three individual lessons by Mr. Juhani Nuorvala and rehearsed in a workshop of the MikroEnsemble. The works will be performed in a concert on Saturday 29 September. Teaching languages are Finnish and English. MikroEnsemble are • Mikael Helasvuo, quarter tone flute • Lauri Sallinen, quarter tone clarinet • Johanna Ilvesmäki, violin • Markus Hohti, cello • Elisa Järvi, quarter tone piano • Veli Kujala, quarter tone accordeon • Juuso Nieminen, quarter tone guitar The price of the masterclass is 195 €, including • three individual lessons • workshop • the performance of the piece by MikroEnsemble • free admittance to October New Music Festival • homestay accomodation The broad stylistic palette of Juhani Nuorvala’s music ranges from pop-influenced tunes and dance rhythms to gentle ambient soundscapes. Starting from the 2000’s, Nuorvala has written most of his music in alternative tuning systems. He has composed chamber, orchestral and electronic works. He has also created the music and sounds for several stage plays, and written a microtonal opera based on the life of Andy Warhol. Nuorvala is currently Lecturer in Composition at the Sibelius Academy, Helsinki. His own teachers include Eero Hämeenniemi in Helsinki, Tristan Murail in Paris, and David Del Tredici in New York. Include a short CV and one example of your compositions (score in PDF and recording in MP3 if available). The selection of students Mr. Juhani Nuorvala will select six students for the masterclass. They will be announced on Friday 29 June 2018. Students are required to deliver the score and parts of their composition latest by Friday 31 August 2018.
