Pedagogical Advisors: Chaya Czernowin (composer) and IRCAM Computer-Music Designers

Chaya Czernowin and the Diotima quartet offer 5 young composers the opportunity to write a new work for string quartet with or without electronics, limiting the use of accessories and playing styles to explore and test all the instruments and formation's possibilities together.

Selected composers must (under penalty of loss of student status):
- commit to writing an original score with the following characteristics:
between 5 and 7 minutes long
that does not make use of any accessories ; only the instruments and their bows
- send an artist’s statement by email describing the musical project with confirmation of the instrumentation before Tuesday, January 17, 2017
- pay all registration fees in full before Tuesday, January 17, 2017
- send their scores by e-mail before Tuesday, April 11, 2017 (conductor and other parts separate)
- send a sketch of their project before Thursday, May 15, 2017 (sound files, patches, according to the type of project)

Prerequisites for String Quartets With Electronics

Students must have an intermediate knowledge of programming with Max or Live and use the software on a regular basis. For example, for Max, successful completion of IRCAM’s class Max: Musical Programming or proof of a level corresponding to the Max tutorials (Basic tutorials 1 through 22, Data tutorials 1 through 5, MIDI tutorials 1 through 5) and MSP tutorials 1 through 31.

Applicants must download and complete the questionnaire concerning their level of computer-music knowledge. Include the completed questionnaire with your application in the "documents" section.

Selected applicants must bring their own laptop computer.

Prerequisites for String Quartets Without Electronics

Selected composers must (under penalty of loss of student status):

between 10 and 12 minutes long
- send an artist’s statement by email describing the musical project with confirmation of the instrumentation before Tuesday, January 17, 2017
- pay all registration fees in full before Tuesday, January 17, 2017
- send their scores by e-mail before Tuesday, April 11, 2017 (conductor and other parts separate)
