Details: The Iranian Music Heritage Movement (IMHM) is organizing its 1st Composer Workshop in collaboration with the Brunel University’s Institute for Contemporary Middle-Eastern Music (BICMEM), London. This collaboration aims to (i) record and award contemporary music of the highest quality and widen creative perspectives; (ii) encourage the creation of new repertoire and to raise interest on the usage of traditional Persian instruments within a Western-type ensemble; and (iii) offer a networking event that brings together the current music/research community to foster cross-cultural experiences.

1.1 The event will take place in mid-December 2014. Details on specific dates and times to be confirmed.
1.2 The total duration of the Workshop is between one to two days, depending on the number of submitted compositions.
1.3 We intend to provide successful composers with an opportunity to have their works performed at London venues.
1.4 Participants will have the opportunity to meet and discuss their compositional ideas, techniques and aesthetics with members of the Jury.
1.5 Assistance on travel and accomodation expenses for successful composers may be available but cannot be guaranteed.

JURY PANEL

2. A jury panel was created to assess submitted composition works. The panel consists of:

MUSIC ENSEMBLE

3.1 Instrumentation available:
Santoor | Ney | Duduk | Tombak | Daf
2 Violins, 1 Viola, 1 Cello, Piano
1 Flute, 1 Clarinet, 1 Horn, 1 Bassoon

3.2 The choice of instruments and number of players is left to the applicants’ discretion. We encourage works of a minimum of two instruments, no solo works are accepted.
3.3 There will be a conductor available for the ensemble if necessary.

AWARDS

The Jury will award outstanding composition works in two categories:
(i) Best Composition Work (£200) (ii)-Best usage of traditional
instrument in a western ensemble (£300)
4.2 All compositions will be recorded in a high-quality audio and video format.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Composers are invited to submit a composition work lasting 4 to 6 minutes in length.
5.2 The Workshop is open to all
5.4 Applications or composition submissions outside the deadline will be disqualified.
5.5 Works requiring electronics will be considered provided that they require no extra personnel other than the composer and are easy to implement.
5.6 Submitted compositions may have been previously performed, recorded or published.

APPLICATION PROCEDURES

6.2 Applicants should:
(i)-apply and pay the workshop
fee by July 31st.
(ii)-Submit their composition in PDF format and provide an Audio file (instrumental recording or midi) by September 1st.
(iii) Send a Biography of no more than 350 words.
(iv) Exceptions to the mp3/MIDI requirement may be made in the case of works which use unconventional notation.
