CALEFAX COMPOSERS COMPETITION 2012

 CALEFAX COMPOSERS COMPETITION 2012
Summary:Prize for wind ensemble
Deadline: 30 November 2012
Date Posted: 28 September 2012
Details: For the 5th consecutive year Calefax organizes a competition for people of all ages who compose music for the instrumentation of Reed Quintet. Following the tradition of the past years, the winning composition will be premiered during the PAN Festival in Amsterdam which
will take place on December 28, 2012. On top of that Calefax is happy to announce that three other Reed Quintets (see below) have committed themselves to performing the winning work at least once in 2013. Thus the winner will be awarded four performances in four different countries.

Theme
This year the theme is 'write a musical postcard'. In other words: make a composition that transforms the memory of a fine travel destination into music. The reason for this theme is a concert programme that Calefax will be offering, called 'Greetings from…'. In this programme the famous Hebrides Overture by Felix Mendelssohn (a memory of his trip to the Scottish Hebrides Islands) stands shoulder to shoulder with Isfahan that Billy Strayhorn composed in
order to keep alive the memory of his visit to the beautiful Iranian city of that name.

Your composition should have a maximum length of five minutes and must be a new work (no arrangements) and has to be feasible by five players on the following instruments:
1 Oboe or cor anglais or oboe d'amore,
2 Clarinet in B-flat or A,
3 Alto or soprano saxophone,
4 Bass clarinet, basset horn or double bass clarinet,
5 Bassoon
While a link to this year's theme 'Musical Postcard' will be appreciated (in the music itself, the titel or in liner notes), the compositions will be judged primarily on their musical quality.
