Thai Opera Censored Under Safety Fears

The Thai composer Somtow Sucharitkul has toned down a scene in his new opera following warnings that it may incite violence or misfortune to certain powerful figures in the country. Any such 'bad luck' would then be blamed on the composer. The opera, Ayodhya is based on the epic poem Ramayana.

There is a worrying clause in the state opera's constitution which states that "if anything in the opera offended the morals of Thailand, they have the right to close down the opera immediately."
