Marisa Michelson's Desire/Divinity Project embodies the joyful and aching tension between earthly and divine love by musicalizing the Western worlds oldest erotic poem ("Song of Songs") and Anne Carson's visceral translation of Sappho's fragments. Fifteen singer-movers, members of Constellation Chor, explore singing as a way of merging the interior self with the exterior world. A mixture of live music video, opera, oratorio, and ritual, Desire/Divinity enlivens the sensual and the sacred, the body and the spirit.

Conceived, composed and performed by Marisa Michelson
Directed by Ethan Heard
Movement Direction by Emma Crane Jaster

Shura Baryshnikov (Joan of Arc)
Boston Children's Chorus
Harvard Radcliffe Collegium Musicum

One of the nation’s most innovative opera companies, Odyssey Opera, continues Trial by Fire: Joan of Arc and the Hundred Years’ War, a season-long exploration of operatic works inspired by martyr, saint, and military leader Joan of Arc (1412-1431). For one night only, Odyssey Opera presents a semi-staged English-language performance of Arthur Honegger’s dramatic oratorio Jeanne d’Arc au bûcher (Joan of Arc at the Stake), a genre-defying masterpiece described as having the perfect cohesion between words and music. A hybrid of Honegger’s eclectic score and sung/spoken libretto by French poet/playwright Paul Claudel, Joan is brought to life in this vivid and emotional drama. Performing the lead role of Joan of Arc is acclaimed actor/dancer Shura Baryshnikov. Conductor Gil Rose leads a full orchestra and chorus featuring the Harvard-Radcliffe Collegium Musicum and the Premier Choir of the Boston Children’s Chorus.

String Quartet ETHEL and Native American Flutist Robert Mirabal in Concert

United States

Tickets: $22
ETHEL (string quartet)
Robert Mirabal (flute)

ETHEL will present new performances of its acclaimed show The River, an integral journey in instrumental virtuosity, song and storytelling. The tour comes in the wake of its 2016 NAMA-nominated release of the same title (Innova Recordings), and furthers ETHEL’s wildly successful nine-year collaboration with Native American musician, actor, writer, instrument builder and three-time GRAMMY® Award-winner Robert Mirabal. Here, ETHEL and Mirabal take inspiration from Water as the embodiment of the Spirit, and evoke the magic and majesty of “the river” which connects us all, with the live performance immersing the audience in a flow of music, narrative and ritual. The music of The River evokes timeless Native American traditions, re-imagined through the contemporary ear. The project has been featured by PRI’s The World, NPR’s Native America Calling, and, after making its premiere at the University of Washington, the Seattle Times wrote that the live show, “resides somewhere beyond the intersection of ceremony and show biz, at a place where multicultural collaboration becomes sacred art.” As delivered by these master performers, the effect is breathtaking, even ecstatic.”
