Thrills and high drama are guaranteed with Kabalevsky’s rip-roaring overture and Shostakovich’s powerful Tenth Symphony, all conducted by BBC Symphony Orchestra Chief Conductor Sakari Oramo.
Kabalevsky’s piece, full of fizz and pop, is followed by a very different work, Michael Zev Gordon’s Violin Concerto, performed here with the acclaimed German violinist Carolin Widmann. Shostakovich’s Tenth Symphony, a heartfelt cry for freedom written under the looming presence of Joseph Stalin, is one of the 20th century’s most shattering symphonic experiences.

Charles Ives (1874 – 1954) is undoubtedly the father-figure of North-American modern music. Ahead of its time, his music was innovative, daring and explorative. One of his greatest works, the Trio that opens this concert, is a reflection on the composer’s time at Yale University.
It was Ives that encouraged the late great Elliott Carter (1908 – 2012) to study composition. Carter’s short Figment II recalls fragmentarily bits of Ives’ Concord Sonata and Hallowe’en – two Ives pieces he particularly loved.
As an internationally-renowned contemporary ensemble, BCMG has premiered over 170 works from many of the world’s leading composers – including the world premiere of Carter’s last ever work, Epigrams, at the 2013 Aldeburgh Music Festival.

London Contemporary Orchestra has been performing Greenwood’s compositions since 2008, and in 2012 recorded his score for The Master (Greenwood’s second collaboration with Paul Thomas Anderson). Dedicated to the promotion of new music and cross-disciplinary collaboration, the LCO has collaborated with a distinguished array of artists, including Radiohead (on A Moon Shaped Pool), Secret Cinema, Actress, Vivienne Westwood, members of Arcade Fire, Boiler Room, Goldfrapp, Terry Riley, Beck and Foals. Winner of the Ensemble category at the Royal Philharmonic Society Music Awards, the LCO’s soundtrack output also features Theeb, Slow West, Macbeth and Assassin’s Creed.

Cartoon capers and nostalgia remade in this technicolor 70th birthday toast to John Adams.
Every note of John Adams’s music is an exploration of the sounds that changed America. European romanticism, Looney Tunes, plus a shiny new work from thirty-something maverick composer Timo Andres: a concert that’s simultaneously nostalgic and forward-looking, as Adams is himself.
So take nothing for granted. You might find yourself relaxing into the lush world of Adams’s Grand Pianola Music – but the cartoon-inspired mayhem of Chamber Symphony? Blink and you miss it. It’s all part of the composer's new world, a potent inspiration to young American voices like Timo Andres. Under the powerhouse direction of Joana Carneiro, this will glow like neon.
