Electronic jazz ensemble, EXEGESIS, bridges the gap between modern music technology and improvisation in its latest album The Harmony of the Anomaly (Dems Dem’s Demos). As the title suggests, the album showcases the group’s own unique blend of heterogeneous soundscapes including electronic jazz, live samplers, interactive music software, and complex compositions. With the help of Gretchen Parlato’s smooth vocals and guest drummers Greg Gonzalez, Mark Guiliana, Robert Perkins, and Mark Ferber, The Harmony of the Anomaly boasts a well-pedigreed collection of artists and eclectic sounds.

'The Brilliant Endymion' and EXAUDI 'the extraordinary ensemble of vocal virtuosi' collaborate on two beautiful evenings of 'new simplicity'.
The first concert presents Arvo Pärt's serene Stabat Mater for voices and strings. This haunting, religious work uses the same falling figures as his well-known 'Cantus in Memorium Banjamin Britten'. That, alongside estbalished favourites of his 'Fratres' and 'Summa', are amongst the best of 'holy minimalism' - a real treat to be heard together.
Endymion and EXAUDI are delighted to showcase commissions by two imaginative British composers who also embrace something of a 'new simplicity' in their music - Joanna Bailie and Philip Venables.
Please note - the second part of 'Music for People' is on Wednesday 21 September at 7.45pm, the Purcell Room at Queen Elizabeth Hall, and features works by Morton Feldman, James Weeks and Andrew Hamilton.

This second concert presents music by one of the american pioneers of new simplicity, Morton Feldman.
Feldman's beautiful, unaccompanied song 'Only' is reminiscent of folk music, while 'Voices and Cello' and 'Clarinet and String Quartet' are two works that tease out scrumptuous harmonies and overlapping lines to create timeless journeys through sound. A rare opportunity to hear these seminal works.
Endymion and EXAUDI are delighted to showcase commissions by two imaginative young composers, Andrew Hamilton and James Weeks, who also embrace something of Feldman's influence, and bring a refreshing 'new simplicity' to contemporary music. Ones to watch for the future.

The jewel at the heart of this opening concert of the season is the world premiere of Silvina Milstein’s Sound Investment commission de oro y sombra ... (of gold and shadows ...). BCMG Artist-in-Association, Oliver Knussen is a champion of Silvina’s music. Argentinian born, previous works by Milstein have used characteristic rhythms, turns-of-phrases, and sounds from Argentinian popular music (tango, milonga, bolero), embodying them in textures inspired by the music of early 20th century Vienna (Schoenberg, Berg and Webern). Scored for two flutes, clarinet, two horns, two trumpets, harp and six strings, Silvina’s Sound Investment commission continues an exploration that began with her 2008 composition surrounded by distance, where she was drawn to explore ‘the seemingly precise manner in which musical shapes and configurations arise spontaneously’.
Silvina is a senior lecturer at King’s College London with a particular interest in the music of Arnold Schoenberg. Whilst Milstein’s piece is the newest in the programme, Schoenberg’s Serenade is the oldest - this series of hyper-expressive marches and waltzes for seven instruments and baritone, was premiered in 1924. Luigi Dallapiccola was heavily influenced by Schoenberg during his early career, his Preghiere (prayers) for baritone and ensemble sets predominantly dark poems by Murilo Mendes.
Two Birtwistle works complete the programme. The World is Discovered, an instrumental ceremony of versus and choruses inspired by Picasso’s 1960 Tate exhibition, and Dinah and Nick’s Love Song, a celebratory miniature scored for three melody instruments and harp composed around the same time as Birtwistle’s opera The Mask of Orpheus.
There will be a free pre-concert talk at 6.30pm with Silvina Milstein and Stephen Newbould, open to all ticket holders, lasting approx. 30 minutes.

It might be the captivating mix of sounds and trends, or it might be the non-punitive concept of listening that has made the programmatic intent of Carlo Boccadoro and his ensemble Sentieri Selvaggi, to bring new music to a wider audience, so successful. But the arrival of this group onto the music scene, bringing together instrumentalists from the major orchestras and chamber formations with jazz musicians, is considered refreshing by music critics as well. A journey through the unexpected affinities between six composers is what Sentieri Selvaggi brings to Venice, with Steve Martland, Christina Athinodorou, Boccadoro himself, Giovanni Verrando, Mark-Anthony Turnage and Steve Reich.

The sage drummer/bandleader and NEA Jazz Master Foreststorn "Chico" Hamilton celebrates his 90th birthday without any hesitation. This jazz legend just released a new album "Revelation" (Joyous Shout 9/27/11) and premieres tracks off it at a monthly concert series at DROM from October - December. A testament to his strength as a bandleader, Chico assembled talent both young and old: Paul Ramsey on bass; Nick Demopoulos on guitar; Evan Schwam on
flute & reeds; Mayu Saeki on flute; and Jeremy Carlstedt on drums and percussion.
Saluted by the Kennedy Center as a "Living Jazz Legend", and appointed to the National Council on the Arts, Chico is considered one of the most important living jazz artists and composers. Chico has a resume that includes scores for film, original compositions, commercial jingles, 60+ albums as a leader, and countless international tours. Born in Los Angeles, Chico had a fast track musical education in a band with his schoolmates
Charles Mingus, Illinois Jacquet, Ernie Royal, Dexter Gordon, Buddy Collette and Jack Kelso. Engagements with Lionel Hampton, Slim & Slam, T-Bone Walker, Lester Young, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Charlie Barnett, Billy Eckstine, Nat King Cole, Sammy Davis Jr., Billie Holiday, Gerry Mulligan and six years with Lena Horne established this young West Coast prodigy as a jazz drummer on the rise, before striking out on his own as a bandleader in 1955. Over the next several years, Chico would become instrumental in developing the
West Coast's cool jazz sound. Some of the varying awards bestowed on him over his lifetime include: the New School University Jazz & Contemporary Music Program's Beacons in Jazz Award; the WLIU-FM Radio Lifetime Achievement Award; a NEA Jazz Master Fellowship, presented to him by Roy Haynes.
