English Symphony Orchestra
Academia Musica Choir
Kenneth Woods, Conductor

Two of the great musical manifestations of the Napoleonic Wars form the heart of this exciting concert- Haydn’s Mass, performed by the hugely acclaimed English Symphony Orchestra and Academia Musica Choir, is a powerful plea for love and peace, while Beethoven’s Eroica is the greatest-ever musical manifesto in the cause of human liberty and freedom. The concert opens with a new tone poem by Philip Sawyers inspired by the paintings of Samuel Palmer, a work brimming with colour, melody and dram in the best Beethovenian spirit.

“This is the kind of music that gives one hope for the future of our art”

ETHEL String Quartet and Native American Robert Mirabal in Concert
Stewart Theatre at NCSU

Tickets: $27-32
ETHEL (string quartet)
Robert Mirabal (flute)

ETHEL will present new performances of its acclaimed show The River, an integral journey in instrumental virtuosity, song and storytelling. The tour comes in the wake of its 2016 NAMA-nominated release of the same title (Innova Recordings), and furthers ETHEL’s wildly successful nine-year collaboration with Native American musician, actor, writer, instrument builder and three-time GRAMMY® Award-winner Robert Mirabal. Here, ETHEL and Mirabal take inspiration from Water as the embodiment of the Spirit, and evoke the magic and majesty of “the river” which connects us all, with the live performance immersing the audience in a flow of music, narrative and ritual. The music of The River evokes timeless Native American traditions, re-imagined through the contemporary ear. The project has been featured by PRI’s The World, NPR’s Native America Calling, and, after making its premiere at the University of Washington, the Seattle Times wrote that the live show, “resides somewhere beyond the intersection of ceremony and show biz, at a place where multicultural collaboration becomes sacred art.” As delivered by these master performers, the effect is breathtaking, even ecstatic.”

The program manifests four generations of one musical Estonian family: works by composer Rudolf Tobias (1973-1918) and by his daughter, composer Helen Tobias-Duesberg (1919-2010), conducting by his granddaughter Maaja Duesberg Roos (b.1945), with choral singing and children’s choir conducting by his great-granddaughter Leila Roos (b.1986). This Easter Sunday performance also includes sacred choral selections by Tobias, the American premiere of Reekviem by Tobias-Duesberg, and the haunting Morning Star by Arvo Pärt, Estonia’s most famous contemporary composer.
