Saturday, October 10, 2015 at 7.30pm FELDMAN: FOR SAMUEL BECKETT St John's, Smith Square London, SW1P 3HA United Kingdom +44 (0)20 7222 1061 http://sjss.org.uk info@sjss.org.uk
Garry Walker conductor
London Sinfonietta
The soaring 300-year-old arches of St John’s Smith Square are the backdrop for this absorbing opening to the season: an evening of immersive music as broad and compelling as Rothko’s grand canvases. Two world premieres form the centre of the programme, with a new work by Mexican composer Marisol Jiménez bristling against Laurence Crane’s understated style. Morton Feldman’s intimate portrait For Samuel Beckett, much admired and rarely performed, completes the bill. Sit back, soak up the atmosphere and lose yourself.

Friday, October 23, 2015 at 7.30pm Nordic Choral Music St Giles, London Cripplegate, Fore Street, London EC2 United Kingdom
BBC Singers
Grete Pedersen conductor
James McVinnie organ
Join the BBC Singers, organist James McVinnie and leading Norwegian conductor Grete Pedersen for an evening of Scandinavian choral music at St Giles’ Cripplegate, London.
The concert features Grieg’s captivating arrangement of traditional Norwegian chorales – the Four Psalms Op. 74 for baritone and mixed chorus – which became the composer’s final composition before his death in 1907.
Choral works by contemporary Norwegian and Danish composers complete the programme: from Cecilie Ore’s Shakespeare-inspired drama on the vulnerability of life ‘Toil and Trouble’ to the profound harmonic layers in Knut Kystedt’s ‘Immortal Bach’, conceived by overlapping the elegant chords of Bach’s chorale ‘Komm, süsser Tod’.
Admission to this concert is on a first-come, first-served basis. Please note that as not everyone who asks for tickets uses them, to make sure we have a full house we send out more tickets than there are places. We do our best to get the numbers right, but unfortunately we occasionally have to disappoint people so please arrive early.

Nicholas Collon conductor
Ann Murray DBE Mrs Grose
Andrew Staples Quint
Sophie Bevan The Governess
Jane Irwin Jessel
Aurora Orchestra
Britten's last and arguably greatest chamber opera, The Turn of the Screw combines Henry James' supernatural tale of innocence and corruption with some of the composer's most powerful music, creating a work that is by turns ravishing and shattering. A truly stellar cast – including Ann Murray, Sophie Bevan, Jane Irwin and Andrew Staples – join Aurora Orchestra under Nicholas Collon for an unmissable concert performance, atmospherically lit to intensify this most elusive and claustrophobic of ghost fables.
'Refreshing the repertoire and broadening appeal are imperative these days. Nobody does it better than Aurora.'

Leila Josefowicz violin
London Symphony Orchestra
Essential American composer John Adams brings his own take on storytelling to the Barbican including a new dramatic symphony for violin and orchestra.
Performed by close collaborator and new music champion Leila Josefowicz, Adam’s latest work takes the idea of the original Scheherazade into the present day and “imagines a modern woman storyteller/hostage whose strength of character and powers of endurance are tested over and over”. There are more traditional tales to be told in the first half with Ravel’s youthful ballet score Mother Goose, featuring Sleeping Beauty, Tom Thumb and Beauty and the Beast.

Tuomas Hannikainen: conductor; Pekka Kuusisto: violin
Just as Brahms and Sibelius did in their concertos, Danish composer Carl Nielsen combines genuine gravitas with luminous virtuosity to present the violin “in the best light, that is, rich in content, popular and dazzling.” These gorgeous melodies are augmented by a treasure from Sibelius’ only opera The Maiden in the Tower, from which an orchestral suite has been arranged by tonight’s conductor.
To complete this programme is the world premiere performance of distinguished Finnish composer Lotta Wennäkoski’s tribute to the work of Jean Sibelius, which celebrates the 150th anniversary of his birth.

Each year an estimated 5,000 women worldwide are murdered by their own families in ‘honour killings’, 12 of them here in the UK. Silk Moth places onstage a Mother. This one-woman performance raises powerful questions: what is her role in this horrific ‘tradition’? Is she a victim, submissive, or coldly complicit?
Based on a series of workshops and interviews conducted in partnership with IKWRO, the Iranian and Kurdish Women’s Rights Organisation, this new work by pre-eminent composer Bushra El-Turk tackles a controversial and sensitive issue, created by a team of internationally renowned artists and performers.

Thursday, November 5, 2015 at Doors open 7.30pm, starts 8pm Rich Perks + vLookup Trio: Fretless Architecture Colchester Arts Centre Church St, Colchester, Essex CO1 1NF United Kingdom 01206 500900 http://www.colchesterartscentre.com info@colchesterartscentre.com
Tickets: Tickets £7 / £6 concessions Rich Perks (fretless electric guitar), Andrew Hall (trumpet) and Tom Atherton (percussion).
As both a guitarist and composer Rich exhibits a keen interest in anything unusual, progressive and innovative. As well as being an active gigging musician in the commercial industry, he performs much contemporary, experimental and improvised music, specialising in fretless electric guitar.
The vLookup Trio is comprised of Rich Perks (fretless electric guitar), Andrew Hall (trumpet) and Tom Atherton (percussion). Together they explore pieces which combine pre-composed material with improvisation in styles that range from avant-garde noise to funk-rock, whilst also pushing the sonic possibilities of a trio instrumentation by incorporating effects and live electronics.
Last year Rich released an international call for scores, in conjunction with Colchester New Music. His aim was to explore the possibilities of the fretless electric guitar further; in the hope that through making relationships with composers, the full potential of this young and exciting instrument could be discovered and developed.
In this ground-breaking performance, Colchester Arts Centre hosts the premieres of five works selected from this call, juxtaposed with vLookup's sonic adventures.
