BCMG The Series

BCMG The Series

CBSO Centre, Birmingham
Berkley Street, Birmingham
United Kingdom

Conductor: OLIVER KNUSSEN
Soprano: CLAIRE BOOTH *
BCMG

A programme of jewels — but jewels with sharp expressive edges — suitably features as great ancestor the music of Anton Webern: his compact Symphony of calm unease and the Five Pieces he wrote just before the First World War, where stillness and intensity are alternate states. Oliver Knussen’s presence guarantees exceptional performances, here and in his own pieces, which include a miniature song cycle in memory of his wife, Sue Knussen. He also presents Colin Matthews’ compelling ...through the glass, a BCMG classic, and a radiantly mysterious and charming work by the young composer Luke Bedford, sounding from out of a dream landscape somewhere between here and the French middle ages. (Paul Griffiths)
