This concert explores Max’s fascination with medieval and renaissance models. Hymn to St Magnus, from 1972, was the first major work he wrote in response to his new home of Orkney. It celebrates the medieval martyr, patron saint of the islands. The work is permeated by the violence of martyrdom and the violence of the sea
