The Transcendent 'I' - Andrew Thomas

Further Information
This duo for flute (doubling piccolo) and piano is a response to Jean-Paul Sartre’s essay The Transcendence of the Ego. During the compositional process I adhered to six principles taken from Sartre’s essay. The most important of these principles is that the Ego does not inhabit the consciousness; ‘it is a being in the world, like the Ego of another.’ Further, the ego is a paradox that grows against the background of an un-reflected act of consciousness and, ultimately, transcends all it unifies. In this piece the flute grows into the Ego whilst the piano reflects upon and recalls the purity of the un-reflected act of consciousness.
