Under the Sorrowful Moon (12 pieces for Solo Piano) - Martin Gaughan

Description

These 12 pieces explore many ideas and facets- sorrow, pain, joy, happiness, darkness and loss as well as, sunlight, moonlight, the pale light of dawn, sunset, water and love.
There is a link to the ‘books of preludes’ by such diverse composers as Bach, Ligeti, Mussorsgky, Debussy and Shostakovich. However there aremany more references within the pieces themselves.
They are based on portraits of many people, things and images, some of which are obvious from the score, some of which are more secret and to be discovered.
The original inspiration behind the piece was a set of photographs taken at night and the possibility of ‘musical portraits.
