Further Information
Three Miniatures is structured in three movements which are meant to be heard as part of an organic whole. The form of the composition is determined by each movements pitch class content, tessitura, and orchestration. The form of the first movement is that of a palindrome centering on the pitch B4. In the second movement, long lines with constantly shifting timbres are spun out by the ensemble. The third movement is characterized by echoes of events from earlier in the work and ends with nothing more than a sigh from the marimba. Three Miniatures was written between November 2005 and February 2006 as a set of etudes in structure and orchestration in preparation for the final draft and subsequent revisions of the Chamber Concerto.
