Mathieu Costecalde Biography

Born close to Paris in 1980, raised in Belfast, he now lives in London. It was at Canterbury Christ Church University whilst studying Clarinet with David Campbell that he began to forge his interest in composition. In 2006 he began a Master's degree in Composition at the Guildhall School of Music, studying under Richard Baker, Julian Anderson, Julian Philips, Malcolm Singer and Alexander Goehr.

After a year at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris in 2007, he was awarded a M/Mus with the highest Distinction of his year. In France he studied composition with Frédéric Durieux as well as applied new technology with Luis Naon, Tom Mays, Yann Geslin and Karrim Haddad. He also worked with tutors from the Laboratoire d’Acoustique Musicale (LAM) and attended seminars at IRCAM (Paris).

In 2006 he collaborated with Andrew Culver and Merce Cunningham for Ocean at the Roundhouse and furthered his passion for contemporary dance in 2007 in a collaboration with the choreographer Ezekiel Oliviera at 'The Place'.

In November 2008 he premiered his electronic work Avec Dispositif Électronique at the Barbican Centre as well as his latest electro-accoustic composition in Paris conducted by Maxime Pascal and performed by the contemporary musical ensemble - Le Balcon. In February 2009 he was awarded an artistic residency at the Samoisiene in Fontainebleau for the premiere of Corps de Sève by the choreographer Caroline Savi. In May 2009 he was commissioned by the singer Julie Fuchs to write La Condition Postmoderne - a work for soprano and live electronics.
