Colin Broom was born in 1973 in Glasgow. He undertook his undergraduate studies at the University of Strathclyde, before going on to receive an MMus in Composition at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music & Drama. In 1997 he co-founded and co-directed Invention Ensemble, a 10-piece group formed to play contemporary music. He has composed music for groups such as the Hebrides Ensemble, Icebreaker, Symposia, Invention Ensemble, Ensemble Thing, The Tyrolean Ensemble for Contemporary Music and the South Bank Gamelan. Besides teaching at the RSAMD, he is currently studying a PhD under the supervision of Gordon McPherson.
