Tom Harrold is a Scottish composer whose music has been played by ensembles from the BBC Scottish Symphony, the BBC Symphony, the Scottish Chamber, the Birmingham Festival and the Aurora Orchestras, WorldBrass, the National Philharmonic of Trinidad and Tobago, the Endymion Ensemble, the BBC Singers, Exaudi, the Ebor Singers, Icarus Vocal Ensemble, and numerous professional soloists, with performances throughout the UK, Europe, and the Caribbean. Tom’s music has been broadcast several times on BBC Radio 3, and as a pianist he has broadcast on BBC Radio Scotland. Notable performances of Tom’s music include a multi-date new-year tour in 2011 across Germany by WorldBrass (with a concert at the Berlin Philharmonie Kammermusiksaal), a commission for the Fifth Summit of the Americas in Trinidad and Tobago, and BBC Proms performances and commissions in 2007 and 2008, along with his music representing Barbados at the Commonwealth Pianorama in 2009.
Tom was winner of the BBC Proms / Guardian Young Composers’ Competition 2007, winner in 2010 and highly commended in 2011 in the Published Adults’ Category of the National iCompose Composition Competition (run by the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Linn Records), twice short listed as a finalist in the NCEM / BBC Radio 3 / Tallis Scholars Composers’ Award (2009 and 2010), Highly Commended in the International Composition Competition for Choirs 2010, and was joint winner of the Heriot-Watt University Young Composers’ Competition 2009. He has had music commercially released by Linn Records and Brass Classics, and his choral music is published by Musikverlag Hayo (Germany).
Tom has recently completed an orchestral fanfare for the inaugural concert of the Birmingham Festival Orchestra, new arrangements for Die Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen’s Summer in Lesmona concert series, and a short piece work-shopped by Colin Towns and the RNCM Big Band. Upcoming projects include a new work for Trinity Boys’ Choir (which will include a performance and CD recording with Bavarian Radio in Munich, along with a televised documentary), a large scale work for the RNCM Brass Ensemble, a saxophone concerto, and a new work for March 2012 for SuperBrass, who’s players include Philip Cobb (principal trumpet, LSO), Roger Argente (bass trombone, RPO), Mike Lovett (lead trumpet, BBC Big Band and John Wilson Orchestra) and Mike Hext (BBC Young Musician of the Year, 1978).
Now aged 20, Tom is in his third undergraduate year at The Royal Northern College of Music, studying composition under Dr. David Horne. Tom was awarded an entrance scholarship to the college, and receives continuing support from Dewar Arts Awards and The Cross Trust. Prior to the RNCM, Tom studied piano and composition at the Music School of Douglas Academy for six years.
