Summary:PhD Scholarship
Deadline: 14 February 2020
Date Posted: 24 December 2019
Details: The Department of Music and Humanities is pleased to invite applications for the Jonathan Harvey Scholarship and for full or partial fee-waiver bursaries for PhD studies in Music Composition starting in September 2020.

The scholarship and fee-waivers are open to applicants engaged in any form of musical composition.

With over 100 students representing numerous fields of study and more than 20 nationalities, our postgraduate community is a vital, diverse, and vibrant part of the life of the department. Our composition students are typically affiliated with the Centre for Research in New Music (CeReNeM; https://research.hud.ac.uk/institutes-centres/cerenem/), a lively and enthusiastic community of staff and students reflecting a variety of compositional practices and approaches. Other postgraduate students are associated with at least one of our other research centres: the Centre for Music, Culture and Identity (CMCI; https://research.hud.ac.uk/institutes-centres/cmci/) and the Research Centre for Performance Practices (ReCePP) https://research.hud.ac.uk/institutes-centres/recepp/). Each of the centres runs a series of events to support the work of its research students, including weekly seminars, workshops, masterclasses, concerts, workgroups, colloquia, and fora.

The university is home to the world-renowned Huddersfield Contemporary Music festival, and its archive centre, Heritage Quay (http://heritagequay.org/), houses an extensive selection of music-related resources including the British Music Collection (http://britishmusiccollection.org.uk/), a collection of over 40,000 scores, recordings, books, and ephemera, plus the archives of the Society for the Promotion of New Music and the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival. The University features one of the UK’s leading electronic music studios (https://research.hud.ac.uk/music/facilities/), including the 50-channel HISS (http://www.thehiss.org/) and many other studios and facilities, as well as hosting the Electric Spring Festival (http://www.electricspring.co.uk). Our visiting artist concert series brings world-class musicians to the department, who each perform student works in their concerts as well as offering workshop opportunities. Recent guests include the Bozzini Quartet, ELISION, Distractfold Ensemble, EXAUDI, Mark Knoop, Mieko Kanno, Séverine Ballon, Garth Knox, Peter Veale, Richard Craig, and Teodoro Anzellotti. CeReNeM also runs the HCR label, distributed in partnership with NMC (https://www.nmcrec.co.uk/hcr), which has provided opportunities for further international dissemination of student compositions.
