Mosaic Voices, Britain’s leading Jewish male voice choir, is calling for submissions from composers of all backgrounds to write settings of sacred Orthodox music for performance in two concerts on January 28th, 2020 to mark Holocaust Memorial Day 2020. The choir, which was founded in 2012, has been broadcast on BBC Radio's In Tune programme (October 8th 2019) and has a released an album 'The Blue Book'. The new commissions will also be recorded and filmed as part of the concert and it is hoped they will enter the Jewish liturgical repertoire as well as becoming potential stand-alone concert works. The commissions are for pieces which should last 4-6 minutes and composers will be paid £500 for the work - which should include a full score and be written for four-part, unaccompanied male voice choir. All compositions will be settings of religious texts in Hebrew, but transliterations and translations will be provided, and chosen composers will be invited to attend a workshop which introduces them to some of the common modes and motives used in Jewish liturgical music. Three commissions are available and we are searching for candidates from all backgrounds and genders and welcome applications from non-Jewish composers. Those interested in being considered for the commission should submit: 2 recordings of previous work - including at least one vocal piece. A full score for at least one of these pieces.
