ICEBERG is pleased to announce its second annual Young Composer Awards. These awards are intended to reward composers and music-makers of exceptional ability who hail from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds. Winners will receive a $1,000 scholarship, free private instruction from one or more ICEBERG member composers, and the opportunity to have a work read and recorded by one of ICEBERG's 2019-20 partner ensembles. Awardees may be active in any musical style/genre. ELIGIBILITY Applicants must be: • At least 16 years of age • A citizen or permanent resident of the United States • Currently enrolled at an accredited high school (or home schooling program) • Preference will be given to applicants who self-identify as being from a traditionally underrepresented community. This includes, but is not limited to, applicants who identify as female, nonwhite, and/or LGBTQ+. • Applicants may not be related to or dependents of ICEBERG New Music member composers, board members, or administrators. AWARD TIMELINE • June 17, 2019 - Application opens • October 15, 2019 - Application closes • December 31, 2019 - Awardees announced • January-April, 2020 - Awardee collaborative period • Autumn 2020 - Funds disbursed FAQ Q. Where is ICEBERG located? A. ICEBERG is based in New York City, but winners do not have to travel (unless they choose to). Instruction from the ICEBERG member composers can take place remotely if necessary, as can exchange of scores, parts, and other performance materials. Q. Does this award include funding for travel? A. Last year, this opportunity was open only to residents of the NYC metropolitan area. This year, it's open to young composers nationwide. There is no expectation of travel. If composers and their families do choose to come to New York for their reading/recording session, we are unfortunately not able to supply travel, lodging, or food costs. Q. What is the nature of the collaborative period from January-April 2020? What is the time commitment? A. The collaborative period is intended to be the window during which the winning composers will be working on a new piece with guidance from one or more ICEBERG member composers. Winners can work on their own time, and have lessons as frequently or infrequently as they wish. There is no requirement to compose a piece. If the student feels that writing a piece is not possible for them, or if they are active in a genre outside of concert music, then they may opt to only receive the $1,000 scholarship. |
