Details: In its second year, the ILMEA Orchestra Composition Competition seeks to encourage the composition and performance of new works at the state conference through a competition open to all ages.

Competition Rules
1. Any composer, regardless of age, geography or nationality is eligible to enter the competition.
2. Composers are limited to one (1) entry per competition cycle.
3. It must be an original, unpublished, non-commissioned work composed since January 1, 2016.
4. Work must not have not been previously been premiered or won awards
5. Entry must be a grade 3-level work for string orchestra (must include violin, viola, cello, bass). Click Here for detailed Difficulty Level Criteria.
6. Single or multi-movement work of 3-6 minutes total performance time.
7. Entry Components:
1. PDF of score that does not identify composer.
2. Handwritten scores not accepted.
3. MIDI or audio recording of the full composition.
4. Entry form completed in its entirety.
8. Winner will be announced June 2019.
9. Only the winning composer's name will be announced. The identity of all other contestants will be held in strict confidence.
10. The winning composer agrees to ensure ILMEA is acknowledged through the use of the following language (“credit”) in the manner described below upon any future publication or distribution: Winner of the 2019 ILMEA Orchestra Composition Competition
11. ILMEA reserves the right to distribute the the IMEC performance recording.
12. Winning composition will be performed and professionally recorded during the 2020 IMEC by a selected Illinois high school orchestra.
