June 17-29, 2019 Application Deadline: March 31, 11:59pm About the Max Computer Music Workshop: Charles Nichols and Ronald Parks, faculty The Max Computer Music Workshop (MCMW) is a two-week intensive workshop, during the Charlotte New Music Festival, focused on programming and composing interactive computer music, using the Max visual programming environment (http://cycling74.com/products/max/). Faculty present a range of computer music topics, including the theory and application of MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) and OSC (Open Sound Control) data input, output, processing, storage, and sequencing, event timing and ordering, digital audio input, output, synthesis, recording, looping, processing, and spatialization, and the composition of interactive computer music. Participants program patches for interactive computer music, and perform their compositions in a public performance at the end of the workshop. The workshop is intended for composers, performers, and programmers with some experience in computer music or computer programming. Selection for the Max Computer Music Workshop is competitive, limited to 15 participants. Daily schedule: 9 am – 12 pm: interactive computer music and Max programming lectures 12-1 pm: lunch 1-3 pm: CNMF guest composer and ensemble presentations 3-6 pm: Max programming lab 6-7 pm: dinner 7:30 pm: CNMF concerts Participants in this workshop: – Work with professional resident musicians to develop interactive computer music compositions and performances, – Compose and perform interactive computer music for laptop ensembles, – Build software synthesizers, samplers, and audio effects processors, – Control audio recording, looping, and processing with music controllers, game controllers, smart phones, and tablets, – Perform in the MCMW concert of the Charlotte New Music Festival, – Receive audio and video recordings of their work |
