University of Nebraska at Kearney New Music Festival XVIII
March 8 – 9, 2019

The University of Nebraska at Kearney is excited to announce its New Music Festival XVIII, being held March 8 – 9, 2019 on the UNK campus in Kearney, Nebraska. Deadline for receipt is Monday, October 15, 2018.

Call for Scores: All composers are invited to submit one score of no more than 12 minutes in duration. Works involving electronics (5.1), graphic notation, and open instrumentation are welcome.

Though we hope to meet all selected composers, there is no obligation to attend the festival.

There are three categories for submission:

Category 1: We are very excited to welcome Aaron Hynds (aaronhynds.weebly.com) as our guest artist. Mr. Hynds is a Nebraska-based tubist, composer, and audio engineer. His emphasis as a performer is in the reconciliation of standard performance practice on the instruments of the tuba family with the demands made by newly written compositions. He will give a solo performance on Saturday, March 9 at 7:30 pm. Composers may submit scores for the following:
 Solo unaccompanied tuba
 Solo unaccompanied bass trombone
 Solo tuba or bass trombone with electronics and/or found objects

Category 2: UNK Faculty and Student Performers. Solo and chamber scores for subsets of the following instruments and voices:

UNK Faculty: Oboe, Clarinet/Bass Clarinet (one performer), Trumpet, Euphonium, Piano, Percussion (up to two performers), Double Bass, Baritone voice.

UNK Students (all undergraduates): Flute, Oboe, Clarinet/Bass Clarinet (one performer), Saxophone (S/A/T/B, one performer), Brass Quintet (or subsets of a Brass Quintet), Piano, Percussion, Mezzo-Soprano voice.

Category 3: Solo and Chamber works where the composer provides the performer(s) or is the performer. This category includes pieces for fixed media.

Submission Guidelines: In an email to UNKnewmusic@gmail.com, provide the following:
1. A link to a cloud-sharing service (Dropbox, Google Drive, etc.) that contains:
a. One (1) PDF score of your piece.
b. A streaming recording of your piece (a live recording is preferred, MIDI is acceptable). Please ensure that the recording can be accessed from your link and does not have to be downloaded.
c. An information sheet (.doc file preferred) with your e-mail address, short (200 words or less) bio, program notes (if acceptable), year of composition, and any technical considerations.
2. Please format the subject of your email in the following manner: Last Name – First Name – Title of Piece – Category 1/2/3.

Composer Conversation Proposals: Composers are invited to submit, along with their score, recording, and information sheet, one proposal for a 20-minute discussion related to any aspect of composition. Up to 3 proposals will be accepted, and the accepted composers will be expected to lead the discussion on the Saturday of the festival.
