Details: The competition brief is incredibly open and there are multiple ensembles you can write for. This includes Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Choirs, Wind Band, Brass Band, Big Band and Saxophone Ensemble. The competition will be judged by staff composers from the Music Department, led by Professor Michael Zev Gordon.

All applicants should submit a completed final score that should…
be a short piece (about 6-10 minutes long)
be suitable for the chosen ensemble (with appropriate instrumentation)
take the size and ability of the chosen ensemble into consideration
be clearly and neatly presented

Please submit entries to the Music Office (Ground Floor, Bramall Music Building) or via email to president@uobmusicsociety.org.uk by 12pm on Friday 28th September 2018. Please note all participants must be current University of Birmingham students or have graduated in summer 2018.

An overall winner will then be selected and the winning composition will be performed in a concert by the chosen ensemble. The winner will also receive a certificate. Up to two additional compositions may be awarded a Highly Commended prize, which may also have the opportunity to be performed.

Approximate sizes of ensembles are as follows:
Orchestras: Variable in size according to requirement of the work
Chamber Choirs: Either SATB or SSA with 30-40 voices
Brass Band: Around fifty players; a very large band
Wind Band: Around 90 players available
Jazz Orchestra: Standard 20-player line up (can include a vocal part)
Saxophone Ensemble: Over 30 players, all saxophone types (SATBa).
