Details: The Margaret Blackburn Composition Competition began in 1997. Margaret Blackburn was a founding member of the Pittsburgh Alumnae Chapter in 1935. When she passed away in 1996, she bequeathed $10,000 to SAI, to be used for a composition competition scholarship. For the first five years, a $500 prize was awarded annually. Since 2003, a $1000 grand prize has been awarded biennially to the female student composer who submitted the winning musical composition. Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited college, university or graduate music program during the academic year. Compositions should be for a small ensemble of no less than two instruments, which may include voice, and no more than twelve instruments, including voice. Works for instruments and electronic sounds, digital media, CD, interactive compositions or works for electronic sounds alone can be included. No published scores are accepted.
