Details: The call for entries to the 2017 NCEM Young Composers Award will be launched on BBC Radio 3’s Early Music Show on Sunday 20 November at 2.00pm

The 2017 award is presented by the National Centre for Early Music and BBC Radio 3 in partnership with The Tallis Scholars, directed by Peter Phillips.

Applications are open to composers resident in the UK in two age groups: 18 years and under; and 19 to 25 years Composers are invited to write a new work for unaccompanied choir, creating a contemporary setting for the words of a great Latin hymn, either Ave Regina Coelorum or Salve Regina. The two winning works will be premiered by The Tallis Scholars in a public performance at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester on Saturday 16 September 2017. The concert will be recorded for broadcast on BBC Radio 3’s Early Music Show.

Applicants must register their interest in the award by 5.00pm on Friday 24 February 2017 by emailing the National Centre for Early Music at education@ncem.co.uk and stating which age group they wish to enter. Completed scores must be received no later than 5.00pm on Friday 24 March 2017.

A shortlist of entries will be presented by The Ebor Singers at the National Centre for Early Music on Thursday 11 May 2017 in a workshop led by composer Christopher Fox. At 7.30pm that day, The Ebor Singers will perform each of the pieces in the presence of a panel of judges, after which two winners will be announced, one for each of the two age groups.

The Tallis Scholars are renowned as one of the leading exponents of Renaissance sacred music in the world.
