Cameron Mackintosh Resident Composer

 Cameron Mackintosh Resident Composer
Summary:Residency Opportunity
Deadline: 03 July 2016
Date Posted: 23 June 2016
Details: We are delighted to announce that applications are now open for the next Cameron Mackintosh Resident Composer placement.

Through the Cameron Mackintosh Resident Composer scheme emerging musical theatre composers are paired with a venue, and given the opportunity to be involved in a range of work which could include underscoring plays, setting text to music or creating their own piece of new work. This opportunity gives valuable experience of working within a venue environment, building working relationships with a range of venues based professionals. Recent venues have included Soho Theatre, London; Bristol Old Vic; the Watermill, Newbury; and the Mercury Theatre, Colchester.

This current placement will be at West Yorkshire Playhouse. The 6-9 month placement will start in late October 2016 but the exact timetable and the projects to be worked on will be agreed in consultation between the composer and the venues’ artistic planning team; key opportunities are likely to include:

• Creating incidental music for the Playhouse’s Christmas production for small children.
• Developing your own new musical work through the Furnace Programme – with the option to lead a development workshop, share new material with a public audience at Furnace: Scratch, or perform a work-in-progress sharing with the Playhouse’s Artistic Planning team.
• To work on one of the Playhouse’s main stage shows in their Spring/Summer 2017 season, subject to creative team appointment.
• Working with the Playhouse’s Youth Theatre Director to create a score for the Youth Theatre’s 2017 production, and to develop new musical material for young people.
• Working with the Playhouse’s Artistic Planning team to plan and deliver skills workshops to their Furnace Artist Network.
• To scope and set up new collaborative projects with city-wide industry partners.

To be eligible to apply: you will need to be a musical theatre composer who has already had some work professionally produced (which can include paid work for a drama college or other training institute). We are also looking for a clear commitment to working in musical theatre. By musical theatre, we mean anything where music and song drive narrative. Ideally, the successful applicant will be based in the Leeds area for the duration of the placement. Applicants already based in Yorkshire will be particularly welcome but applicants from across the UK are eligible.

The successful recipient will receive an all-inclusive fee of £11,000.
