Entry deadline: Friday 29 July 2016 Email your entry to competition.submissions@scottishopera.org.uk Prospective composers/librettist pairings should submit: A one page synopsis outlining the narrative for a 15 minute opera A short biography for each person involved A composer portfolio (with recordings if possible) of previous works for voice Concepts based on cross art form ideas, including the involvement of film, installations and within the electro-acoustic genre, will be welcomed. Submissions from individuals who wish to create both the libretto and score are also welcomed. Performing Forces The stipulated performance forces will comprise • 1 professional soloist • Smaller solo roles (drawn from Connect Chorus) • Connect Chorus (SATB – around 25 voices) • Connect Orchestra: Flute (db piccolo) Clarinet (db bass clarinet) Bassoon Trumpet Horn 2 x Percussion (please see note below) Strings: 4.3.3.2.1 (players) Please note: when considering percussion, pit space in the proposed performance venue is limited and therefore inclusion of a sizeable instrument(s) such as a full set of timpani, marimba or xylophone may restrict the choice of other percussive instruments. The judging panel will include: Derek Clark, Head of Music, Scottish Opera Olivia Fuchs, Opera Director Christopher Gray, Director, Connect Company Stuart Stratford, Music Director, Scottish Opera Convenor: Alex Reedijk, General Director, Scottish Opera The sum of £3,500 will be awarded to each of the three winning submissions. In addition, there will be a series of mentoring sessions for these artists conducted by members of the judging panel from October 2016 to August 2017 plus opportunities to attend orchestral and production rehearsals for Scottish Opera’s productions. All three works will be produced by a professional creative team appointed by Scottish Opera and performed by the Connect Company in Glasgow in April 2018 (venue and exact dates to be confirmed).
