Royal Northern Sinfonia is passionate about the sound world of the classical chamber orchestra – the committed playing; the importance of each individual contribution; the clarity, finesse and focus of sound it can produce. That’s why we are always keen to add new works to our repertoire for the core chamber orchestra line-up. Inspired by our distinctive tradition of performing classical repertoire, as well as the ‘Reclaiming Mozart’ strand in our 2015/16 season, we are establishing a new competition for young composers to write for a Mozart-size orchestra. Submissions will be assessed by a distinguished jury, consisting of composers Sally Beamish, John Casken and Agustín Fernández, and our Music Director Lars Vogt. The works of three finalists will be performed live in concert by RNS conducted by Lars Vogt during Sage Gateshead Emerging Artists Focus Week New Year: New Artists on 22 January 2016. A final vote on the night, including jury, orchestra and audience will establish the prize winners. Criteria & Eligibility A composition of up to 8’ in length Scored for: 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 French horns, 2 trumpets, timpani and strings (8.6.4.4.2) – auxiliary instruments can be used (piccolo, alto flute, bass flute, cor anglais, e flat clarinet, bass clarinet and contrabasson), but no additional instruments are permitted. Open to all composers studying full-time at undergraduate or postgraduate level at a UK university or conservatoire during academic year 15/16 Inspired by Mozart We want young composers to engage with Mozart’s world and his music’s unique appeal to audiences, by responding to a specific Mozart work or scene from one of the composer’s operas in their own new composition. Awards £2,500 for the first prize £1,500 each for the two runners-up Submission Deadline: 5pm on 31 October 2015 Format: anonymous score both as pdf and as a Sibelius file sent electronically to classical@sagegateshead.com, along with separate CV and any explanatory notes (including a paragraph detailing the link to Mozart’s work). Users of other notational software, such as Finale, should send an audio file (preferably mp3) in place of the Sibelius file. If selected for Round 2, pdfs of orchestral parts will have to be produced and emailed at short notice in time for:Workshop Day with Royal Northern Sinfonia for up to six semi-finalists: week commencing 16 November 2015 From this day up to three final works will be selected for the final performance on 22 January. |
