Details: It is with great pleasure that I can announce the 2015 South Brisbane Federal Band Composition Competition. Now in its 4th year, we are determined to make this years bigger and better.

For this competition, entrants are encouraged to create an original entertaining work, march or sacred item/hymn or test piece (B-C Grade) for a brass band. The compositions will be judged by an appointed adjudicator, and the shortlisted entries will be performed at the Composition Gala Concert, where the winner will be announced.

There are substantial prizes on offer by the band: first prize is worth $500.

The intent of the terms and conditions is not to restrict the entrants creativity only to promote the submission of completely original works.

1. The composition will be judged by the adjudicator of the competition on compositional merit:

1.1. Utilisation and demonstration of the brass band genre
1.1.1. Correct interpretation of:
1.1.1.1. Style
1.1.1.2. Structure
1.1.1.3. Instrumentation
1.1.1.4. Elements of music
1.2. Compositional techniques

2. The composition should be at least 3 minutes long but no longer than 8 minutes. Compositions can be in the following categories:

2.1. Traditional Items: March or Sacred Item/Hymn 2.2. Entertainment
2.3. Test Piece
2.3.1. Queensland Band Association will potentially utilise at a future competition.

3. The composition you submit must be an original composition not an arrangement of any known song/piece.
3.1. No reference to existing melodies, even in it is in the public domain it will not be accepted

4. Entrants must provide:
4.1. A music.xml file for the adjudicators reference
4.1.1. This will not be reproduce or manipulated, but is to assist the adjudicator to review the compositions.
4.2. Printed and bound copy of the score
4.2.1.Scores must be of an appropriate size with all clearly legible and able to be read.
4.2.2. Back to back printing
4.3. All band parts printed
4.3.1. When individual parts are two pages or more please ensure that they printed on A3 paper with two pages
per sheet in a way that is most convenient for the musician.
4.3.2. Multiple copies of parts need to be made for appropriate instruments e.g SoloCornet–4Parts
4.4. PDF version of your score and parts.
4.5. A short blurb (at 25 - 100 words) describing your composition must be provided.
4.6. A short biography and photo (25 - 100 words)

5. The composition must be scored for a brass band with the provisions for the following parts:

5.1. Conductors Score
5.2. Eb Soprano Cornet
5.3. Solo Cornet
5.4. Repiano Cornet
5.5. 2nd Cornet
5.6. 3rd Cornet
5.7. Flugel Horn
5.8. Solo Eb Tenor Horn
5.9. 1st Eb Tenor Horn
5.10.2nd Eb Tenor Horn
5.11.1st Baritone - treble clef
5.12.2nd Baritone - treble clef
5.13.1st Trombone - treble clef
5.14.2nd Trombone - treble clef
5.15.Bass Trombone - bass clef
5.16.Euphonium - treble clef
5.17.Eb Tuba - treble clef
5.18.Bb Tuba - treble clef
5.19.Percussion - instruments of composer’s choice*

* Standard setting of four (4) players or less. Composers may choose to write for unconventional or less common instruments, however instrument availability for performance may not be guaranteed.

6. Compositions must not have already been published prior to concert date.
6.1. Entrants can submit works completed as part of school/university assessment
7. Submitted material will not be returned. Composers must agree that a copy of the composition will be kept by the South Brisbane Federal Band for possible future use.
7.1. The South Brisbane Federal Band will not reproduce any works submitted for distribution.
7.2. If approached by other bands for copies the Coordinator will pass on contact details of the composer to said
organization.
8. For entrants seeking anonymity an alias may be used on your composition, however, your full name and contact details must be provided on the entry form.
8.1. You must clearly state on your entry for your alias
9. Each entry will be provided a feedback sheet from the adjudicator
9.1. Comments are not from the South Brisbane Federal Band but that of the Adjudicator.
9.2. In times when compositions have similar issues the adjudicator may choose to write generic comments to enable all composers to benefit from one another’s feedback.
