Call for Embedded Opportunity: BBC Symphony Orchestra

Call for Embedded Opportunity: BBC Symphony Orchestra
Summary:Symphony Orchestra Opportunity
Deadline: 11 March 2015
Date Posted: 25 February 2015
Details: Embedded is a Sound and Music composer and creative artist development programme. Funded by The Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, Embedded places a selection of composers from a range of disciplines into extended relationships with leading national arts organisations. Aimed at talented composers at an early stage in their career, Embedded is a bespoke programme, providing practical hands-on experience and a range of significant creative opportunities. So far over thirty composers have benefited from Embedded, and there is overwhelming evidence that it can be a transformational experience in terms of talent development, artistic ambition, professional experience and growing networks.

As part of the Embedded programme, Sound and Music and BBC Symphony Orchestra are offering an opportunity for 3 composers to spend 11 months in residence with the orchestra, developing their skills in writing for orchestra and having new works premiered. During this project the composers will have the opportunity to gain inside knowledge of all aspects of the working life of the orchestra, working closely with players, conductor Pierre-André Valade, the BBC SO management team, and observing and participating in Learning projects. The 11- month process will involve two workshops and final performances will be recorded for broadcast in BBC Radio 3’s Hear and Now. All activities will take place at the orchestra’s home in Maida Vale studios.

The opportunity is focused on artistic development, and the successful applicants will be encouraged to explore their ideas and creative practice. We want to foster networks between Embedded composers and creative discussion across musical disciplines, so the opportunity also encompasses sessions where all the current participants in our Embedded residencies meet and share ideas.

Scope:

This opportunity is to develop a maximum 12’ new work across two workshop sessions, prior to a performance at a Maida Vale Invitation Concert in March 2016
The proposal must be for a new piece, not something that is already written or in development.

Sound and Music, Somerset House, Strand, London, WC2R 1LA 020 7759 1800

info@soundandmusic.org

The proposal should be for a piece for full acoustic orchestra without soloist or electronics, in a standard orchestral layout. The BBC SO’s forces for this project are:

3(2nd/Alto,3rd/picc).3(3rd/CA).3(1st/Eb,3rd/B).3(3rd/contra) 4.3.3.1.
1T.3P.1H
Strings: 14.12.10.8.6.

Composers will be asked to select contrasting sections of up to 5’ duration of their new piece to explore in detail in each workshop.

The selected composers will be encouraged to allocate approximately 30 days orchestral contact time to this project.

The chosen composers will need to be willing to travel to BBC Symphony Orchestra rehearsals and performances in the UK, and maintain regular contact with the orchestra. Parts and scores: the composers will be expected to produce materials of a standard to be discussed with the orchestra librarian.

The financial support for the opportunity includes:
-agreed expenses for travel and accommodation, to cover workshops, rehearsals and final performances. Travel and accommodation expenses for attending other events in the orchestra’s calendar may also be provided.
-a bursary of £2,000 to cover the selected composer’s time
