After the highly successful launch of this competition in 2012, and by popular demand, the ESTA Young Composers Competition will be run again in collaboration with The Purcell School for Young Musicians Category 1 aged 11 and under Category 2 aged 12 - 15 Category 3 aged 16 - 18 Category 4 aged 19 - 21 Young composers from all age categories are invited to submit new compositions for a combination of string players. Category 1 aged 11 and under Young composers can write for any combination of the following 1 x violin, 1 x viola and 1 x cello (for example, a duo for violin and cello, a solo viola piece or a trio for violin, viola and cello) Category 2 aged 12 -15 Young composers can write for any combination of the following 2 x violins, 1 x viola, 1 x cello and 1 x bass (for example, a string quartet, a duo for cello and bass or a quintet for all five instruments Categories 3 and 4 aged 16 - 18 and 19 - 21 Young composers in these categories can write for any combination of PHILOMEL, which is a 14-piece string ensemble, as described below. Performers will be The Purcell Schools PHILOMEL ENSEMBLE This is an ensemble of brilliant young string players who enjoy playing new music and work with great commitment and enthusiasm. It is directed and run by pupils from the Purcell School, including members of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and others who have won international awards.
