It is with great pride that we announce our criteria for the 2015 Young Composer’s Award. The 2015 requested work will be a choral work 4 – 8 minutes in duration. Because of the length of the requested work, and in our attempt to create new music that is usable in today’s synagogue, we strongly encourage applicants to submit multi-movement pieces, where each movement can be performed grouped together or on their own as individual pieces. The submitted work may be either accompanied, a capella, or both. Applicant may use solo voices and instrumental accompaniment if desired. Text can be taken from any Jewish source but must include the use of Hebrew (using English is also permissible provided that there is at least one section in Hebrew). We strongly encourage applicants to think about how their music will fit into Jewish services and to explore using Jewish modes and traditional nusach in their work.1) Scores must be legibly copied or printed in full by the composer and contain all necessary dynamics, tempi, etc. (chorded “charts” or tapes are unacceptable). Pdf files are preferable to hard copies. The composer’s name should appear only on the first page of the score. Applicants should be Jewish composers from any country, at least 18 years of age by the submission date, and born on or after January 1, 1979. The winner receives a cash prize between $1,800 and $2,500 based on merit and if there is a desire to award more than one composer. The winning work will be premiered at a prestigious venue within North America, site to be determined. The winner also receives travel to the event, a one-year honorary membership in the Guild of Temple Musicians, and submission for possible publication with Transcontinental Music, the largest publisher of Jewish music in the world. |
