The second DARE New Composer’s Forum aims to bridge the yawning gap in the opportunities available for composers to evaluate their symphonic work in a professional context. It offers emerging composers a rare chance to create work for full orchestra and to develop that work with renowned conductor and composer Elgar Howarth together with the Orchestra of Opera North. There will be a public performance of the chosen works on 29th November to which composers, conductors, critics and representatives of publishing houses will be invited. The work will be recorded by Opera North and a copy given to each composer. Submission and selection process The award is open to all composers resident in the UK and Ireland who have not yet had the opportunity to work with a professional orchestra and have not yet had a publishing contract. There is no age limit. Timetable 9 August 2013: Deadline for submission 13 September 2013: Shortlist announced 28 & 29 November 2013: Shortlist candidates work with and have their new work performed by the Orchestra of Opera North in the Howard Assembly Room Selection process The panel will select four pieces to be developed with Elgar Howarth and the Orchestra of Opera North during the Forum. Four of these pieces will be selected to be performed publicly on Friday 29 November in the Howard Assembly Room. The panel comprises: - Martin Iddon, composer, musicologist and Head of the School of Music, University of Leeds Hattie Garrard, Orchestra, Chorus and Concerts Director, Opera North Submissions Composers should submit ONE score for consideration, to Helen Stephens Music Secretary Opera North 46 New Briggate Leeds LS1 6NU Guidelines Scores should preferably be notated in C, specify duration and include full details of the orchestral forces required, especially percussion. Composers of the works selected will be invited to contact the Opera North Librarian before preparing the orchestral parts.
