Profile Charlie Usher was born in 1987 in Hungerford, Berkshire. After studying piano with Chris De Souza for a few years, he was a winner of the Guardian/BBC Proms Young Composer of the Year competition in 2004, resulting in a performance as part of the BBC Proms Chamber Music series. He was awarded the Sellers Scholarship to study composition at the Royal Northern College of Music in 2005, where his current tutor is David Horne. His music has been performed by members of Endymion (Nancy Ruffer and Michael Dussek), Southern Sinfonia, the RNCM Symphony Orchestra and the RNCM New Ensemble in various venues across the UK. His works have been broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and BBC local radio. In addition to his activities as a composer, he is actively involved in teaching, and has been involved with the Manchester schools based ‘Sound Ideas’ education project since 2006. Charlie Usher is a spnm shortlisted composer.
