Julia Kny - Biography  
 


Julia writes music for film and concert stage, and is based in London and Berlin. Within a broad spectrum of styles, ranging from classical and contemporary to Jazz, electro-acoustic and other modern forms, Julia’s work includes orchestral, chamber and choral music, as well as music for solo instruments, modern ensembles and electronics. Her collaborations with international filmmakers include documentaries and animation films, as well as short dramas, film noir and experimental films.

Julia’s concert music has been performed in the UK, Germany and the USA. Films she has scored have been featured at the 6th Discovering Latin America Film Festival in London’s famous Ritzy Cinema, the BritDoc Festival in Oxford, the Roxy Bar&Screen Doc series, the Scottish Documentary Institute. The documentary Just Like Mom by M.E.Andrade, for which Julia wrote the music, recently won the ‘Royal Television Society Award’ for best factual postgraduate work in the UK.

Most recent collaborations include work with Singapor/London-based video artist Ming Wong on the project Angst Essen/Eat Fear, which has been on show in Berlin from June to October 08 at various venues. Earlier this year, Julia worked with Brazilian filmmaker Andrade on the short doc Calling Home, and attended the BritDoc08 Festival in Oxford.

Plans for 2009 include commencement of a large symphonic project in Berlin, further collaborations with Andrade, and a new collaboration with a young Polish/French filmmaker on a beautiful but slightly bizarre documentary...

Julia holds a Master in Composiiton for Screen and a Bachelor in Composition - both from the prestigious Royal College of Music, London. Awards include scholarships from the RCM (2002-7), a Leverhulme Trust Awards (2006-7), the Adrian Cruft Prize for Composition (2005).
