London Sinfonietta can`t cover costs of commissioning new work.  John Robertson at 19:24 on 04 October 2004

Just reading the news piece on this site:

http://www.compositiontoday.com/news/179.asp

Cathy Graham (of London Sinfonietta) said that her core subsidy did not allow her to cover the costs of commissioning new music

I find that piece of information quite amazing. I thought I had noticed the number of Sinfonietta commissions falling right off in recent years. I think they're making a grave mistake if they aren't commissioning new work though, surely that will if anything ensure the lack of vibrancy complained about in the item.

John - thanks for raising this point. We'll try to get an interview with the Sinfonietta in the near future and see what they have to say on the matter.
