Scott, I agree and disagree with you. I believe that beating your head against a wall (not literally) is sometimes the only way to guarantee consistency. Changing your mind if it gets difficult to figure out what to do next will only result in schizophrenic pieces. My best musical decisions have often been made after much deliberation.

However, I do agree that sometimes we bark up the wrong tree and it's best to leave it to one side and try something new. Figuring out what ideas to filter out is an art in itself.

Ultimately, the last part is what I am talking about. Perhaps the metaphor "you can't fit a square peg through a round hole" is more appropriate. Sometimes, I have tried real hard, but have simply ended up with a mangled hole and peg halfway through. Just because you push hard at something doesn't mean it's gonna give.
