Betty Freeman, a leading patron of new music in the late 20th and early 21st century has died at the age of 87. Freeman was the galvanising force behind an impressive and undogmatic range of modern classics, from John Adams' Nixon in China, to Birtwistle's Antiphonies. She was the dedicatee of works by Cage, Feldman, Berio and others, and in all supported the creation of over 400 works by over 80 composers.
