ETHEL string quartet
ETHEL, a postmodern, indie-classical quartet, pays special homage to the brilliant, gorgeous, and masterful women who are making their musical mark on the 21st century. Sometimes fierce, sometimes seductive, always full of creativity, composers like Mary Ellen Childs, Anna Clyne, Missy Mazzoli, and Pulitzer Prize-winner Julia Wolfe are warriors and champions of music today. Repertoire by these women—including the first performances of Wolfe’s bluegrass-inspired Blue Dress for String Quartet—is performed with music named by the composers as their personal sources of inspiration. Clyne’s favorites include rock legend Stevie Nicks, while Mazzoli draws creative strength from Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth, one of the leaders of the worldwide wave of alt rock bands. Wolfe cites the timelessness of Aretha Franklin, who continues in her role as standard-bearer for so many of today’s musicians. Amplified quartet arrangements of works by these powerhouses are paired with the works of Clyne, Mazzoli, and Wolfe. By exploring new compositions by three of today’s most influential composers side by side with the groundbreaking music of their muses, ETHEL offers a distinctive and stirring read on their interconnections.

ETHEL will present new performances of its acclaimed show The River, an integral journey in instrumental virtuosity, song and storytelling. The tour comes in the wake of its 2016 NAMA-nominated release of the same title (Innova Recordings), and furthers ETHEL’s wildly successful nine-year collaboration with Native American musician, actor, writer, instrument builder and three-time GRAMMY® Award-winner Robert Mirabal. Here, ETHEL and Mirabal take inspiration from Water as the embodiment of the Spirit, and evoke the magic and majesty of “the river” which connects us all, with the live performance immersing the audience in a flow of music, narrative and ritual. The music of The River evokes timeless Native American traditions, re-imagined through the contemporary ear. The project has been featured by PRI’s The World, NPR’s Native America Calling, and, after making its premiere at the University of Washington, the Seattle Times wrote that the live show, “resides somewhere beyond the intersection of ceremony and show biz, at a place where multicultural collaboration becomes sacred art.” As delivered by these master performers, the effect is breathtaking, even ecstatic.”

On Friday, March 23rd Brooklyn Art Song Society (BASS) presents the 8th installment of its acclaimed new music series In Context. This seasons featured composer is Harold Meltzer, one of the most notable living American composers. Two contemporary masterpieces and a world premiere by Mr. Metlzer are paired alongside works that inspired the composer by Holst, Schumann, and Wolf. BASS favorites soprano Laura Strickling and tenor Dominic Armstrong join mezzo soprano Abbey Fischer in her BASS debut. Mr. Meltzer gives a free pre-concert lecture on his works at 7:00PM

Presented by the Foundation of Estonian Arts and Letter, Esto-Atlantis Choral Concert is part of an international event acknowledging the Republic of Estonia’s centenary. 100+ singers from around the world gather to perform, celebrate, and honor the rich heritage of Estonian choral music on Lincoln Center’s world renowned stage. The program manifests four generations of one musical Estonian family: works by composer Rudolf Tobias (1973-1918) and by his daughter, composer Helen Tobias-Duesberg (1919-2010), conducting by his granddaughter Maaja Duesberg Roos (b.1945), with choral singing and children’s choir conducting by his great-granddaughter Leila Roos (b.1986). This Easter Sunday performance also includes sacred choral selections by Tobias, the American premiere of Reekviem by Tobias-Duesberg, and the haunting Morning Star by Arvo Pärt, Estonia’s most famous contemporary composer.
