A live screening of Koyaanisqatsi the unforgettable 1982 film set to a new arrangement of Glass’ film score for his ensemble and orchestra.
Godfrey Reggio’s 1982 time-lapse cinematic vision of American cities and landscapes Koyaanisqatsi has been described as a ‘visual tone poem.’ In this wordless vision of nature and civilization is Reggio’s view of an ‘unbalanced world’, the collision of man with technology and the inadequate, humiliated state of language. As iconic as Reggio’s film is Glass’s score – momentous in its gradations of tempi, its seismically shifting harmonies and its seminal pitting of synthesized sounds against the weight of the orchestra. Here the Britten Sinfonia and the Philip Glass ensemble play the composer’s revised orchestration as a live accompaniment to the film.

Tickets: £8
This December we’re delighted to be forming part of ‘Freedom From Torture Presents’, a series of nights curated by independent labels and artists to raise awareness about victims of torture, their situations, and the work FFT is doing to help them recover from trauma.
The night features Gyorgy Kurtag‘s masterpiece, ‘Kafka Fragments‘ for soprano and violin, based on extracts from the author’s diaries, as well as six new works:
KATE WHITLEY: ‘Scars’ (text by Stephanie Ndoungo) a short opera for soprano and chamber ensemble
THOM ANDREWES: ‘MLR’ (text by Tim Malmo) soprano, speaker and trio
GREGOR RIDDELL: ‘Minding the gap’ (text by Amina Abdalla) for electronics two sopranos and cello
LAURENCE OSBORN: ‘A mind like the Northern Line’ (text by Amina Abdalla), for two sopranos, two double basses and percussion
JUDE CARLTON: ‘ Waiting’ (text by Noah), for tenor, piano and percussion
WILLIAM MARSEY: ‘I Do Not Belong Here’ (text by Ozgur), for baritone and two guitars
The new pieces have been commissioned specially for the event, setting and responding to texts written by torture survivors from Freedom from Torture’s creative writing group Write to Life. Write to Life provides clients with a creative outlet for their experiences and a way to explore the torture from their past and the difficulties of living in exile. It has evolved to be the longest-running writing group for torture survivors in the world.
