Cian Ciarán Presents: Rhys & Meinir
Hoddinott Hall
Millennium Centre, Cardiff Bay, Cardiff

Cian Ciarán
BBCNOW

For 20 years and counting a member of Super Furry Animals, Cian Ciarán comes together with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. The World premiere performance of a work that has been almost two-decades in development features a full 84 piece orchestra and Cian Ciarán’s Rhys & Meinir promises a rare, aural experience that encapsulates the drama of ancient Welsh folklore, the envisioned splendour of rural Wales and the innate, musical curiosity of the intrepid composer.

Rhys and Meinir found love in the village of Nant Gwrtheyrn, North Wales and their childhood romance blossomed for all to see. On the day of their marriage, Meinir is nowhere to be found and the mystery leads Rhys into months of despair. When finally a thunder strike reveals Meinir’s final hiding place, Rhys is unable to live a second longer.

Curated by John Woolrich

Get to know Luciano Berio; one of the towering musical personalities of the post-war avantgarde, who constantly reinvented musical sound and form. His music drew inspiration from and reworked the vernacular of folk, pop and other classical music and indeed his own compositions. The London Sinfonietta collaborated a great deal with Berio during the 1970s and 1980s, helping both ensemble and composer to establish an international reputation.

Completed at the end of 2016 and premiered by tonight’s soloist in the US in January, Sally Beamish’s potent and political new piece was written in response to Beethoven’s immaculate First Piano Concerto. You can trace connections between the works when pianist Jonathan Biss performs them both tonight. Brett Dean’s Testament also takes Beethoven as its inspiration, drawing on the composer’s desperate frustration with his growing deafness, while Elgar’s ever-cherished ‘Enigma’ Variations pays homage to his friends and family.

Nico Muhly: Marnie
English National Opera
London Coliseum

ENO

Marnie is a compelling psychological thriller set in England during the late 1950s. A young woman makes her way through life by embezzling from her employers, before she moves on and changes her identity. When her current boss Mark Rutland catches her red-handed, he blackmails her into a loveless marriage. Marnie is left with no choice but to confront the hidden trauma from her past.

Following Two Boys in 2011, this is the composer Nico Muhly’s second world premiere for ENO. With a libretto by Nicholas Wright, Marnie is based on the novel by Winston Graham, by special arrangement with Universal Pictures. It examines the cost of freedom, the limitations of forgiveness and the impossibility of escaping the past, in music that is direct and powerful.

Tony Award-winning director Michael Mayer makes his UK opera debut, collaborating with ENO Music Director Martyn Brabbins. Grammy Award-winning mezzo Sasha Cooke sings the title role, while acclaimed bass-baritone Daniel Okulitch sings Mark Rutland. They are joined by ENO favourite Lesley Garrett.

For the tenth anniversary of Stockhausen’s death we present rare performances of two of his defining masterpieces: the meditative, trance-like Stimmung and the earth-shattering Cosmic Pulses.

Ten years ago, Karlheinz Stockhausen ceased composing on a physical plane – but his music always reached beyond the merely visible. Cosmic Pulses and Stimmung create musical spaces of rapturous, visionary beauty and intensity, and these performers are profoundly committed.

Every Stockhausen performance is a major event, of course – not many composers born in the 20th century speak more directly, or with such an original voice. Stimmung and Cosmic Pulses come from opposite ends of his extraordinary career, and here Cosmic Pulses will be accompanied by a laser installation from audio-visual artist Robert Henke. This is music that demands to be heard – and felt – live, and it’s performed today by artists who knew the composer intimately.

The music of American-born, London-based composer Arlene Sierra brilliantly evokes the natural world, and this BBC Philharmonic commission will lift us out of town and into spaces far beyond. You’ll also hear sounds of the countryside in Dvorák’s joyous Eighth Symphony, but the urgency of Bartók’s First Piano Concerto is firmly rooted in the city. Two longtime favourites from France cross the Channel to join us: conductor Ludovic Morlot and piano dynamo Jean-Efflam Bavouzet.

London Symphony Orchestra

Bringing together three masterpieces of Chinese cinema, Tan Dun’s trilogy sets the Martial Arts tradition originally found in Chinese opera into a modern context, giving it an international appeal through film. Traditional delicate solos on cello, violin and piano, thundering percussion and the soaring strings of a live orchestra; all these elements of Tan Dun’s score play an essential role in the big screen depiction of clashing armies, flying warriors and forbidden romances.

While Tan Dun first attracted attention with works that mixed Chinese folkloric instruments and techniques with elements of avant-garde Western classical music, it was arguably the scores for his Martial Arts Trilogy that propelled him to international fame.;

At the vanguard of Boston’s classical music scene, Odyssey Opera and the Boston Modern Orchestra Project (BMOP) present the world premiere of the live performance of The Trial at Rouen by Norman Dello Joio. A semi-staged, English-language production led by conductor Gil Rose, The Trial at Rouen unites Odyssey Opera (one of the nation’s most innovative opera companies), BMOP (the nation’s premier orchestra dedicated exclusively to commissioning, performing, and recording new orchestral music), and internationally renowned singers Heather Buck (Joan of Arc) and Stephen Powell (Pierre Cauchon). This marks the third and most condensed opera of Odyssey Opera’s Trial by Fire: Joan of Arc and the Hundred Years’ War, a season-long exploration of operatic works inspired by martyr, saint, and military leader Joan of Arc (1412-1431). Preceding the opera will be a concert performance of its inspiration, Dello Joio’s symphony The Triumph of Saint Joan.

Part of Southbank Centre’s year-long festival, Belief and Beyond Belief, The Protecting Veil blurs the lines between humanity and divinity – a glimpse into otherworldliness through the rituals and seasons celebrated around Mary, the Mother of God.

Move even closer to the powerful music in this performance with City of London Sinfonia and Matthew Barley, as they invite audiences to explore the music’s meaning through Living Programme Notes.

In this performance directed from the cello by Matthew Barley, the venue is transformed through lighting and intimate seating, so as to immerse the audience in Tavener’s ecstatic vision.
