Boston’s most original and innovative opera company, Odyssey Opera, continues its Wilde Opera Nights series, a season-long exploration of operatic works inspired by the writings and world of Oscar Wilde. For one-night only, Odyssey Opera performs a concert version of Alexander von Zemlinsky’s The Dwarf (Der Zwerg), based on Oscar Wilde’s tale “The Birthday of the Infanta” (libretto by Georg Klaren). Led by conductor Gil Rose, this 90-minute opera is sung in German with projected English translations. Czech tenor Aleš Briscein sings the title role of “The Dwarf”—a return appearance with Odyssey Opera after his lauded performance as Dvořak’s “Dimitrij.”

With Mahler’s Sixth—a tour de force for virtuoso orchestra—Maestro Jaap van Zweden and the HK Phil invite you to continue on our musical journey of Mahler’s symphonies. Within the Symphony’s compelling sonorities you’ll also hear passages of extraordinary beauty and calm—like the soaring “Alma theme”—a portrait of the composer’s wife—and sounds of cowbells from distant alpine pastures. In the last movement, listen for the three hammer blows of fate, “the last of which fells the hero like the stroke of an axe,” Mahler revealed. You are bound to feel the anguish of the prophecy. The concert opens with the world premiere of a new commission by the young American-Chinese composer Conrad Tao, The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Composer-in-Residence for our 2016/17 season.

Nach dem Erfolg in der letzten Saison wieder im Programm!
Seit über 500 Jahren singen die Wiener Sängerknaben in der Wiener Hofburgkapelle Messen und Motetten vom Mittelalter bis zur Moderne – an diesem Repertoire spiegelt sich die westliche Musikgeschichte. Geistliche Musik gibt es nicht nur im Christentum, und in dieser Konzertreihe bieten die Wiener Sängerknaben zusätzlich einen spannenden Ausblick auf spirituelle Musik aus anderen Kulturen.
Mit der eigens gegründeten Schubert-Akademie musizieren die Wiener Sängerknaben im MuTh Messen von Mozart, Haydn, Victoria, Schubert und Wirth; gepaart mit Hymnen, jüdischen Gesängen, indischen Bhajans, Qawwalis aus Pakistan, Liedern von Schamanen und Oberton-Meditationen.
Jedes der Konzerte befasst sich mit einem Thema: In der zweiten Saison geht es um Verzweiflung, Wut und Schrecken sowie Chaos.
Philosophen und Autoren, Schauspieler, Naturwissenschaftler und Politiker lesen dazu und denken gemeinsam mit dem Publikum über das Gehörte nach.

Celebrating its 16th season, the critically-acclaimed Ensemble for the Romantic Century (ERC) returns to BAM Fisher with a two-week run of The Dreyfus Affair. Written by Eve Wolf and directed by Donald T. Sanders, this multi-media production illuminates the controversial story of the 1894 treason conviction of Captain Alfred Dreyfus that had a decades-long reverberation in the political landscape of France and the rest of the world. Featuring Max von Essen (Tony Nominee for An American in Paris) in the title role of Alfred Dreyfus and Mark Evans (Irish Rep's Finian's Rainbow) as his devoted brother Mathieu Dreyfus, this tragic tale of intrigue, undying love, conspiracy, and political will is brought to life through the fusion of drama, history, and music.

Already for several years, Latvian violinist Jana Ozoliņa studies and works in Switzerland, frequently taking additional classes from the renowned violinist Boris Kuschnir. She performs with the Young Eurasian Soloists, chamber orchestra formed by her. In Riga the skilled and spirited soloist will perform the Vivaldi-inspired, melodically throbbing concerto The American Four Seasons by the founding father of American minimalism, Philip Glass. Another unusual encounter proposed by Sinfonietta Rīga will be the one with the string piece by Unsuk Chin, the best-known Korean composer in Europe – inspired by graffiti seen on the streets and embellished with bells and gongs. And finally, a new chamber concerto by the quiet Latvian with an ironic smile Oskars Herliņš.

Melodia Women’s Choir, New York’s premier ensemble for women’s choral music conducted by Cynthia Powell, continues its 14th season with Awakening the Spirit in a soaring concert featuring the U.S. premiere of John Rutter’s “Visions.” Written by Rutter as a showcase for violin and choir, “Visions” is a powerful work that examines the spiritual, religious, and historic importance of Jerusalem as a symbol of “a utopian ideal of heavenly peace and seraphic bliss for redeemed humanity” in four movements. Melodia is excited to work with accomplished violin soloist Areta Zhulla, along with harpist Rita Costanzi, and an all-female string quintet.
Also on the program is “The Dancers” from notable Welsh composer Grace Williams (1906-1977), and women’s choral favorite “Choral Hymns from the Rig Veda” by Gustav Holst (1874–1934). “To say that I’m excited about this music would be an understatement,” says Artistic Director Cynthia Powell. “To be able to offer the U.S. premiere of a new work by John Rutter is a thrilling thing in and of itself, but to bring to life the gorgeous choral suite ‘The Dancers’ by Grace Williams.... Add to that the exquisite playing of violinist Areta Zhulla, and we have a knockout concert.”
