Wigmore Hall Director John Gilhooly’s commitment to the creation of new works of chamber music is ideally served by this spectacular recital of UK premières, a clear jewel in the 2012/13 season’s crown.
The Arditti Quartet’s worldwide reputation rests secure on almost 40 years of excellence in the performance and development of contemporary music. The JACK Quartet can likewise cite a glorious record of achievement in bringing new work to life, underpinned by its players’ close association with composers such as Matthias Pintscher, Helmut Lachenmann and Julia Wolfe.
This showcase concert, part of a landmark Arditti and JACK Quartet project, offers audiences the thrilling prospect of hearing the birth of two string quartets and two string octets by Hans Abrahamsen (b.1952), Mauro Lanza (b.1975) and the English composers Rebecca Saunders (b.1967) and James Clarke (b.1957).

Borodin’s Polovtsian Dances, from his opera Prince Igor, are amongst his most famous pieces, full of exotic melodies and vibrant orchestration. Cellist Dimitri Maslennikov has a special affinity for Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme, a delightful set of variations on an elegant theme inspired by Mozart. While living in America, Czech composer Dvorák was enchanted by the music he heard there, declaring: ‘These beautiful and varied themes are the product of the soil. They are the folk songs of America’. For his Ninth Symphony, Dvorák emulated this style, while also recalling the music of his homeland. The result is his most popular symphony, its famous Largo just one of many glorious moments.

"Triadic Memories" is a vast single-movement work lasting approximately two hours. Like other compositions of Morton Feldman's final years, it's closely related to the aesthetics of Mark Rothko's paintings, and is characterised by stasis and extremely quiet dynamics. The unusual title refers partly to an attempt to evoke memory itself: listening to this piece is like flicking through an old photograph album. Its delicate, slowly-shifting harmonies reach toward something that was once definite, but is now lost in time. It was perhaps this fragility that led the composer to aptly describe the piece as "the largest butterfly in captivity".
"Triadic Memories" has only been performed a handful of times across the world, and the 25th anniversary of Feldman's death falls this year. All in all, this concert promises to be a special occasion.

Saluted by the Kennedy Center as a "Living Jazz Legend", and appointed to the President’s Council on the Arts, this NEA Jazz Master is considered one of the most important living jazz artists and composers.
DROM presents EUPHORIC – Celebrating the Life & Music of Chico Hamilton for three Sunday night performances this Fall (OCT - DEC) featuring Chico and his long-time touring band featuring Nick Demopoulos (guitar), Paul Ramsey (bass), Evan Schwam (flute + reeds), Mayu Saeki (flute), and Jeremy Carlstedt (drums + percussion) as well as special featured guests TBA. The Schubert Ensemble
In this fitting programme for Remembrance Sunday the Schubert Ensemble performs Elgar’s warm, autumnal Piano Quintet, written at the end of World War I, together with Brahms’s deeply personal Piano Quartet No. 3, with possibly the most gorgeous slow movement in the repertoire. These late romantic masterpieces contrast vividly with Jonathan Dove’s sparkling and energetic Piano Quintet, written for the Ensemble in 2009.

He may have been overshadowed by Wagner, but without Weber the history of opera would be very different. Weber’s Der Freischütz, with its atmospheric Overture, is considered the first important German Romantic opera – and had a huge impact on Wagner himself. Brahms and Wagner were rivals, splitting the musical world with their different approaches to composition, yet few can now resist the sunny charm of the Violin Concerto by Brahms. With its lyrical opening movement, exquisite, singing Adagio and vigorous finale, the Concerto is an ideal showcase for the talents of Chloë Hanslip. Dvorák’s Eighth Symphony is one of his most joyous, full of Bohemian folk-tunes and orchestral colour.

Elias String Quartet
Mozart fashioned his Clarinet Quintet for Anton Stadler, a great Viennese wind player and fellow Freemason. The score periodically places the clarinet centre stage while generally treating the instrument as an equal chamber music partner. This concert opens with the world première of a new work, specially written by Colin Matthews for the Elias Quartet.
In creating string quartets, Schumann observed, ‘the composer must possess an intimate knowledge of the genre’s history, but should strive to produce more than mere imitations of Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven.’ He followed his advice to brilliant effect in the third of his Op. 41 quartets, displaying inventive ingenuity throughout.

This musical journey of rare and premiere works for women's voices brings together medieval, classical, sacred and contemporary in one exuberant concert showcasing the talent, diversity, and joy that has become the hallmark of Melodia Women's Choir this past decade.
At the center of Melodia's performance, and the inspiration behind the program's title, is the world premiere composition "Questions About Angels" for voices, marimba, piano and double bass by New York-based composer Sally Lamb McCune. Winner of the second Melodia Women's Composer Commission Competition, this work is in three movements and features a unique blend of angel-inspired poetry by the 15th-century mystic Bianco da Siena, English poet Christina Rossetti, American poet laureate Billy Collins, African-American spirituals and Shaker hymns.
"I'm thrilled to be conducting Sally Lamb McCune's new work for Melodia's 10th anniversary season," says Artistic Director Cynthia Powell. "The work starts in an ethereal mode and moves into a sultry jazz feeling in the second movement, set to one of my all time favorite poems by Billy Collins. The last movement is fast and exciting - her instrumental and vocal writing makes the piece virtually fly off the page." Powell, as founding conductor, celebrates her 10th anniversary with the group.
The varied program is rounded out with a sampling of songs in anticipation of the December holidays, including John Tavener's "The Lamb" with poetry by William Blake, and a collection sacred songs of early America arranged by the renowned women's a cappella group, Anonymous 4.
Closing the program is a selection of medieval works arranged for women's voices, recorders, violin and percussion arranged by the U.K.-based ensemble, The Mediaeval Baebes.
The program also features Allison Sniffin's "Punch!" a tour de force instrumental work featuring world-class marimba player Haruka Fujii and award-winning pianist Taisiya Pushkar.
Melodia Women's Choir has been called "riveting" by the New York Times and was named one of the top choirs in New York by Time Out New York. Melodia has been heard on radio stations WQXR and WNYC, seen on NBC-TV, and has performed at Symphony Space, Merkin Concert Hall, and the Surrogate's Courthouse as guest artists at the Women's History Month Celebration for the New York City Comptroller.

Landmarks is the London Sinfonietta's new series of chamber concerts, featuring performances of seminal music combined with short video interventions setting a context for the composer, the work, and its impact on the musical and cultural life of the 20th century. The first subject is Olivier Messiaen and his Quartet for the end of Time, premiered in a prisoner of war camp in 1941 where the composer himself was incarcerated.
At this performance, the ticket price includes a complimentary drink after the concert.
