Internationally renowned star concert organist Gail Archer celebrates the distinctive voice of American organ music in An American Idyll - a five-concert series touring the churches and synagogues of New York City. Performing a colorful collection of organ music by 20th and 21st century American composers, Archer is slated to premiere two commissioned works: organ preludes He Leadeth me! O Blessed Tho’t!, Be Thou My Vision, and Eternal Father, Strong to Save by Columbia alumnus Hayes Biggs; and a new work (title TBA) by Pulitzer-prize finalist and Vassar College professor Harold Meltzer. Hailed for championing contemporary organ music by female composers, Archer will also feature works by Joan Tower, Judith Lang Zaimont, Pamela Decker, Claire Shore, Libby Larsen, Emma Lou Diemer, and Kim D. Sherman.

The Boston Modern Orchestra Project (BMOP), the nation’s premier orchestra dedicated exclusively to commissioning, performing, and recording new orchestral music, presents “Strange Bedfellows: Unexpected Concertos” – a program of five incongruous concertos by five different composers featuring five of today’s most revered solo artists. Spearheading the evening is the world premiere of Eric Chasalow’s Horn Concerto with horn soloist Bruno Schneider. Other works include: the American premiere of Andrew Norman’s Air: Concerto for Theremin with Dalit Warshaw (theremin); Luciano Berio’s Chemins II with Jack Stulz (viola); Keeril Makan’s Dream Lightly: Electric Guitar Concerto with Seth Josel (electric guitar); and Avner Dorman’s Mandolin Concerto with Avi Avital (mandolin).

The Most Eclectic Contemporary Music Festival of the Season
Transversing genres, locales and aesthetic modes throughout NYC and beyondWith a 28-year history of leading-edge concert production in NYC, Composers Concordance presents The Composers Concordance Festival 2012. This will be a whirlwind of five innovative contemporary music concerts in ten days, including over 40 of NYC's most distinctive and accomplished composers. This festival spotlights the composer in different contexts, engaging the audience and performer in the creative process, and contending with the dizzying multiplicity of styles within today's music scene. A concert, focusing in part on music created using ‘found’ material, provides the perfect opportunity to bring back Judith Weir’s Musicians Wrestle Everywhere. This a thirteen minute chamber concerto inspired by the exotic soundscape of Weir's urban environment, London SE17, was premiered by BCMG in 1995.
BCMG/SAM Apprentice Composer-in-Residence Seán Clancy’s new piece uses both ‘found’ text and popular music as its inspiration. Findetotenlieder is an extended song in six verses, with instrumental interludes, setting text drawn from Gabriel Orozco’s artwork Obit to music very loosely based on Someone Great by LCD Soundsystem. Obit, recently exhibited at Tate Modern, is itself a collection of found objects – single peculiar lines taken from New York Times obituaries.
Premiered by the London Sinfonietta in March 2011, Feldman’s Sixpenny Editions alludes to the popular sheet music Barry used to avidly collect and listen to as a boy.
The second half of the programme is entirely taken up by Gérard Grisey’s ‘Four songs to cross the threshold’, which draws on poems of Christian, Egyptian, Greek and Mesopotamian origin that tell of the journey from life to death. Grisey was a major figure in French 20th century music, and a leading exponent of the so-called ‘spectral’ style of composition. This song cycle was, in an uncanny coincidence, his last completed work before his sudden and untimely death in 1998.
There will be a pre-concert talk at 6.30pm with Seán Clancy and Stephen Newbould, open to all ticket holders, lasting approx. 30 minutes.

Richard Baker is one of the foremost composer-conductors of his generation. Commissioned through BCMG’s Sound Investment scheme, Baker’s new work for ensemble and electronics addresses the theme of ‘irrational exuberance’; taking in Ravel’s death-driven waltzes, and the sounds of 80s New York disco; with live electronics that Baker has developed together with his colleague, composer/sound artist Nye Parry.
BCMG premiered Causton’s Chamber Symphony in 2009 and this performance will be the Group’s first since Causton revised the piece following its premiere.
Giving context to these works are three pieces from the 1940s and 50s. Scored for unorthodox percussion instruments, John Cage’s Second Construction is one of a series of three works composed between 1939-42, while Cage was touring the west coast of America with a percussion ensemble.
Oiseaux exotiques (Exotic Birds), for piano and an orchestra of winds and percussion, is an enchanting sound fantasy containing imitations of no fewer than 40 different birdsongs or calls. Pianist Nicolas Hodges, the soloist for the Messiaen, is joined by Ryan Wigglesworth to open the concert with Igor Stravinsky’s Sonata for Two Pianos.
There will be a free pre-concert talk from 6-6.30pm with Richard Baker, open to all ticket holders.
