Written for Jo Davey, a friend from work to celebrate her 30th birthday in February 2008.



Bethlehem
Part 1 of two studies around a carol (the 2nd part is Magi Cosmos)which i wrote for Christmas 2007 and based around the well-known Coventry Carol. This part is quite descriptive with a loose narrative: the first, slow, section represents the rigours of the journey towards Bethlehem and is followed by a faster section which shows the arrival in Bethlehem and the frantic search for somewhere to stay. The birth of Christ is finally announced with a vibraphone chord based on a more abstract, symmetrical harmony.



Magi Cosmos
2nd part of Two studies around a carol -using the Coventry Carol as source material. The succesive treatments of the carol refer to the expansion of human conciousness brought about by the arrival of the Magi in the Christmas story. It is not presented from a traditional Christian viewpoint but rather sees their role as symbolic of the influence of esoteric knowledge on human life. The piece retuns to earth at the end with a short coda reminiscent of a simple folk song.



Fanfare for Claire
Written for Claire Davies as a 30th birthday present in January 2008.



New York Christmas
A short descriptive piece somewhat in the style of Joe Zawinul with an exuberent trombone solo. This one dates from Christmas 2006 and was realised using Sibelius 3.
